Philosophy

Every student in College Algebrashould have a positive and challenging experience. The key to success includes:

  1. A consistent daily effort on the part of the student and teacher.
  2. Communication between teacher, student and parent.

Diversity Statement

All individuals have a right to an educational environment free from bias, prejudice and bigotry. As members of the Hamilton High School educational community, students are expected to refrain from participating in acts of harassment that are designed to demean another student’s race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, disability or sexual orientation.

Course Description

College Algebra is a college level course for high school students. It is a course designed to strengthen the student’s algebra skills to prepare them for Pre-Calculus or Trigonometry. This course is equivalent to a one-semester College Algebra course at any college across the country. This course can be taken for dual credit, earning you 3 college credit in MAT 152, from Chandler/Gilbert Community College. Therefore, the amount, level, and quality of work in this course will be what one would expect in a college-level course. Students interested in earning dual credit need to take the Accuplacer test which will be given on Monday August 15th (A-H last names), Tuesday August 16th (I-O last names) and on Wednesday August 17th(P-Z last names) from 2:30 to 4:00pm. Seniors are able to come on their alpha day at 11:45am. Dual credit registration is due on Friday August 19th. The cost for dual credit classes is $86 per credit and $15 for registration. Taking a class for dual credit is cheaper than taking it at college since students do not need to buy textbooks in high school. Cost for MAT 152 is $258 plus $15 registration fee.

In order to earn dual credit, student must earn 70% or higher both semesters. You will need to be attentive in class and take notes. The amount of information you will receive IN class, the activities/assignments you will do IN class, as well as the discussions that will take place IN class make your presence and participation crucial to your success. You will be expected to do work outside of class. Given that you apply yourself and take a real interest in the material covered, you will be well prepared for any level of mathematics you choose or test into at the college level. Remember that no matter what college or university you choose to attend, you will be required to take a placement test that determines which level of math you need to start at, even if you have taken dual credit classes.

Academic Dishonesty

This course may require a good deal of collaboration with your colleagues on homework assignments, and in-class assignments. As a result, the lines between healthy discussion and inappropriate sharing of ideas/work can become unclear for some students.

I expect… all students to adopt the following rules:

  • All work you turn in to be yours.
  • You will not bring unauthorized aid into any testing situation.
  • You will not assist in helping anybody else be dishonest in their work.

Responses to suspected academic dishonesty

If it's established that a student was dishonest on a task, then a grade of zero will be given for the task.

Class Rules

  1. All school rules will be enforced.
  2. There is to be no talking, or leaving your seat, while a teacher or a student is speaking to the class.
  3. Bathroom/Water Hall Pass may only be used if you sign out when you leave the room and sign back in when you return.

4.No food, No phone, No drinks, No gum, No iPods, No iPads, etc. allowed in this classroom.Water only! There is new research that states our ability to focus on a task reduces tremendously when we are trying to work on another task. In order to do well in class, you may not use your phone during class. I will take your phone away for the period if it is used during class. If this becomes a constant problem, then I will hand the phone to security.

Tardy Policy

ASD, After School Detention, will be given if a student is tardy to class.

ASD is from 2:30 to 3:25pm for sophomores and juniors in a math tutoring room.

Students are to sign-in when attending tutoring to serve ASD.

Seniors with half day schedule will serve ASD in the ISS room from 11:45am to 12:30pm if enrolled in 4 classes, and 12:25pm to 1:10pm if enrolled in 5 classes.

Consequences for Not attending ASD:

1st missed ASD = 2:30-5:00pm Detention

2nd missed ASD = 2:30-7:00pm Detention

3rd missed ASD = ISS for a day

4th missed ASD = OSS and parent conference
