Home Reading Requirements for 2016.17

Students will need to read seven outside reading novels based on a particular genre for that time period (see chart below). Please choose an appropriate, challenging novel that interests you! Novels that cannot be read for outside reading are: StarGirl, and When You Reach Me.

Please select a novel with parent approval. The novel, with one story line, should be at least 100 pages with a reasonable size font and no/very few pictures. Once both parent and teacher have approved the book, the book cannot be switched without getting the parent and teacher to approve it again with a signature. The projected due dates for the signatures and book reports are below.

With a book level (ATOS) of at least 6.0. We do not always provide lists, but you can ask your local librarian, bookstore clerk, or visit websites such as genrefluent.com or ala.org. Please make sure it meets the criteria of the assignment and that a parent or guardian approves of it.

LA6 Home reading novels: Additional Requirements

Novels that cannot be read for outside reading are: Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. Please do not read these novels ahead of the rest of the class as we will be working on activities related to these novels in class during the school year.

We are using Accelerated Reader, also known as (aka) Renaissance Learning. Select novels from ARBookfinder (see link on Edlio). We do not always provide lists, but Accelerated Reader can help you find a title. You can also ask your local librarian, bookstore clerk, or visit websites such as genrefluent.com, pvld.org, ala.org, scholastic.com or Amazon.com.
