Scholarship Information

Criteria:

*HEEF scholarships are based on a combination of low-income family background, academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities, community volunteer work, church service or work-employment.

HEEF applicants must be:

A.  Latino/a who has lived in Orange County (OC), CA for the past 6 years

B.  An OC public or private high school graduate who enrolls fulltime at a 4-year college; an OC community college transfer who enrolls fulltime at a 4-year university; or, an entering or continuing community college (CC) student who qualifies for a Sub Fund that awards CC students.

C.  Eligible for need based financial aid. All applicants must submit a FAFSA and report their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on their online HEEF application. Dream Act/ AB 540 applicants must complete the self-reported information section of the online application.

Application Process:

*The Orange County Hispanic Educational Endowment Fund (HEEF) serves students who live in Orange County (OC), California only.

*To all high school and community college transfer applications: the online scholarship application period for 2012-2013 opens on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 and closes on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

3.  Under “Specific ScholarshipPrograms”, click Hispanic Education Endowment Fund

4.  You will then create a log in and proceed to the HEEF online application

5.  You can SAVE and return to complete your HEEF online application

6.  You must SUBMIT your HEEF online application on Friday, March 09, 2012 by 5:00 p.m.

Selection of Recipients:

*HEEF community advisors, Sub Fund representatives and Foundation staff will review applications. Candidates will be notified by e-mail of their application status by April 18, 2012. A limited number of applicants will be invited to a personal Interview at Santa Ana College on April 28, 2012. An awards ceremony will be held in May 2012.

Eligibility:

*If eligible, students may apply for a HEEF General Scholarship (3.0 GPA or higher) and one Sub Fund Scholarship (See Sub Fund criteria for specific GPA requirements). However, a student can only receive one scholarship.

*There are two types of scholarship for 2012-2013.

I.  HEEF General Scholarship

-  For OC high school seniors or community college transfers (3.0 GPA or higher) who will attend a 4-year college or university in Fall 2012.

-  Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000 (up to 40 will be awarded for 2012-2013)

No renewal scholarships will be available from the general HEEF fund for 2012-2013.

II.  HEEF Sub Fund Scholarships

-  There are 29 HEEF Sub Funds that award scholarships to attend a 2-year or a 4-year college/university. Each Sub Fund has its own criteria and may offer renewal scholarships. Applicants must meet specific criteria for these scholarships. Please see Sub Fund criteria below.

-  Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000 (Up to 35 will be awarded for 2012-2013)

1.  AlvaradoSmith Raymond G. Alvarado Scholarship Fund

For OC high school or community college graduates who have been admitted to a Law School or for non-OC Latino students who are attending an OC Law School. Applicants must have participated in college pre law programs or clubs as well as worked or volunteered in a local Law Firm or public law services agency and/or the OC Hispanic Bar Association.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

2.  Angel and Rosemary Varela Scholarship

For OC Dream Act/ AB 540 community college transfers with a 2.5 GPA or higher who will enroll at a 4-year college or university.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

3.  Architecture and Engineering Scholarship

Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and enroll in an accredited 4- or 5- year Architecture or Engineering Program.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

4.  Arts Scholarship

For high school or community college students who are admitted and enroll in music, drama, dance, visual or fine art, graphic design or related major.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

5.  Association of Hispanic Professionals for Education

For a high school seniors or community college transfers who plan to pursue a Business Administration or related major.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

6.  Chapman University Scholarship Program

For high school seniors who enroll at Chapman University.

May be renewable based on available funding.

7.  De La Libertad Scholarship Fund

For Human Options clients and/or their children, who enroll at a 2- or 4-year college, a vocational training or other educational program.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

8.  Eisner Foundation Scholarship

Applicants must be or have been active participants in Goals. The award may be used for fees or tutoring.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

9.  El Viento Scholarship

For high school seniors who participated in the El Viento program from 4th -12th grade. Preference will be given to students who attend a Coast Community College.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

10.  Fernando & Olga Niebla Scholarship

For HS seniors or community college transfers who enroll at a 4- year college or university. Applicants must demonstrate superior academic performance, financial aid eligibility, involvement in extracurricular; community or church service, and/or work.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

11.  Friends of CA State Fullerton / Richard Bermudez Scholarship

For high school seniors and community college transfers who are admitted to and enroll at CSUF, demonstrate extracurricular or community leadership and have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

12.  Friends of the University of California, Irvine Scholarship

For high school seniors or community college transfers who demonstrate extracurricular or community leadership and enroll at UC Irvine.

No renewals for 2012-2013.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

13.  Healthcare Education Scholarship Fund

For high school seniors or community college transfers who plan to major in Healthcare.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

14.  Henry T. Nicholas III Foundation Fund Scholarship

Applicants must be or have been a Santa Ana USD Nicolas Academic Center (NAC) participant. Graduating high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Preference will be given to IT and Engineering majors.

May be renewable based on available funding.

15.  Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

For high school seniors or community college transfers majoring in Business, Marketing, Finance, International Business, Management or a related major.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

16.  Lara Family Scholarship

For community college transfers of Mexican descent with a 3.2 GPA or higher who demonstrate exceptional leadership, and/or extracurricular, church/ community service, or employment-work.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2000

17.  MANA De Orange County

For Latinas with dependent children, who re-enroll in college and who qualify for need based financial aid.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2000

18.  Mayte Santacruz Pre Law Scholarship Fund

For high school seniors or community college/university students interested in pursuing a career in Law. Preference will be given to AB 540/ Dream Act high school seniors from Santa Ana USD and Santa Ana CC transfers with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2000

19.  Mike Carona Foundation Law Enforcement Scholarship

For high school students or community college transfers majoring in Law Enforcement, Criminology or a related major .

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

20.  New Century Financial Corporation

For community college transfers who will enroll in a 4-year college/university or students who are currently enrolled in a MBA program. Preference will be given to Business, Finance, or Marketing majors.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

21.  Orange County Register/Excelsior

For high school seniors or community college transfers who are involved in newspaper, yearbook, journalism or communications.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

22.  Orange County United Way

For high school seniors who participated in the OCUW AVID Program at Capistrano Valley, Cypress, Katella, Savanna, Huntington Beach, Westminster, Century, Godinez Fundamental, Segerstrom or Middle College High School.

May be renewable based on available funding.

23.  Sage Hill High School

For 4-year college or university bound Sage Hill HS seniors.

May be renewable based on available funding.

24.  Sandra Y. Cervantes Scholarship Fund

For high school seniors and community college transfers. Preference will be given for students interested in business, entrepreneurship, real estate, finance or other related areas.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

25.  Santa Ana College/ENLACE Scholarships

For current SAC students or SAC transfers to a university. Must be in good academic standing and have unmet financial need.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

26.  Soka University of America Scholarship Fund

For high school seniors and community college transfers who enroll at Soka and are involved in extracurricular and leadership activities

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

27.  Union Bank of California

For high school seniors and community college transfers majoring in Business, Finance, or Marketing or a related major. Must be in good academic standing and have unmet financial need.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000-$2,000

28.  Vanguard University Scholarship Fund

For high school seniors or community college transfers who enroll at Vanguard. Scholarship may be used for tuition, books, and fees.

May be renewable based on available funding.

Award Amount: $1,000 - $2,000

29.  Wells Fargo Scholarship

For high school seniors and community college transfers whose major is in Financial Services or a related major.

May be renewable based on available funding.
