Hillbrook Primary School World of Stories Display

Our World of Stories display began as a project with our three year three classes at Hillbrook Primary School, who have been learning about Roald Dahl. We did some brainstorming about what our favourite Roald Dahl stories were, and discussed what made these stories unique. The children agreed that The BFG and George’s Marvellous Medicine were two favourites. We talked about the power of reading and why such books are so enjoyable to read. Through lots of discussion, we agreed that stories like those written by Roald Dahl have the power to take you to another place, in to a completely different world. We took this idea to our weekly Art lessons where we painted some of our favourite parts of The BFG and George’s Marvellous Medicine. In order to show how stories create new and exciting worlds for us to enter, we decided to decorate the templates of 3D houses with pictures and words from our favourite stories. Once these were folded, each little house became a 3D representation of a different story book, symbolic of the unique little world we enter when reading stories.

The project evolved to include children and parents from across our expanding school community. On parent’s evening this November, we invited parents and children from Nursery to Year Six to visit our Art room with their favourite story book. They were given a house template and together parents and children discussed ways they could represent what they loved about the story on to the template, using the art materials provided. In the end we had over one hundred and fifty 3D houses to fold; each a little representation of a child’s favourite story.

Over the course of the evening, favourite story books across our school community emerged: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Wind in the Willows, Peter Rabbit, The Cat in the Hat etc. These favourite stories helped to create a 5 metre long colourful 2D display with reads ‘At Hillbrook Primary School we’re made from stories’, surrounded by splashes of colour, words and images from Hillbrook’s favourite stories. This display creates a backdrop for each of our 3D houses/favourite stories, which hang from fishing line along our year three corridor and are lit up with little fairy lights. The children in year three are very excited to see their love of stories displayed in this way and it has been fantastic to involve parents and children as young as three years old in this process. We have loved participating in this display competition! See below for photographs of our work.
