Day Hike (1A). Cosumnes River Preserve. The area is a beautiful wildlife habitat for a great variety of birds, deer, beaver and river otters. Starting with a view of the visitor’s center, we’ll take a short, leisurely walk (with lots of stops along the way, including the visitor’s center) on the boardwalk and dirt trails (may be muddy if there have been recent rains). Evening Walk (1A). Laguna Creek Trail - Elk Grove. This lake and creek habitat features an abundance of wildlife, including ducks, geese, beavers, muskrats, river otters, and who knows what. We'll grab lunch at a local eatery and then pile into our cars to go south into the Cosumnes River Preserve, winter home of Sandhill cranes and a variety of other waterfowl. Starting in a little campground near Strawberry, we’ll follow the trail using an historic toll road along the base of Lovers’ Leap, which is a popular rock climbing area. We end up at the top of Lovers’ Leap for lunch with breath-taking views of Horsetail Falls, Pyramid Peak and Trail leads to a great view of the South Fork of the American River.
