The Vacancy

We are looking for:

  • a teacher of science able Chemistry up to A level and able to teach all three sciences up to GCSE
  • a teacher of science able Physics up to A level and able to teach all three sciences up to GCSE.
The science department teaches across the whole age range for Year 3 to Year 13. We offer both GCSE Core and Additional GCSE and Biology, Physics and Chemistry single science GCSE. At A level all three subjects are offered. The post would suit an experienced teacher or an NQT, a successful NQT induction programme is in place.

Your immediate ‘line manager’ the Head of Science to whom you have been assigned in respect of all professional duties and the Head of Year in respect of your pastoral responsibilities.

  • Department Assigned to: Science

You may be required, at the direction of the Headteacher, to contribute to the teaching of subjects which are the responsibility of departments other than that to which you have been assigned. The appropriate Head of Department will monitor your professional duties in respect of such teaching and provide feedback to yourself and your assigned line manager.

  • Professional Duties as a Teacher

The following duties are common to the job descriptions of all teachers in the school regardless of any additional specific duties listed in section 7, and form the basis of the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document.

Teaching

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons in accordance with the defined curriculum of the school.
  • Teach, according to their educational needs, the students assigned to you, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by students at school or elsewhere.
  • Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of students.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual students and any class or group of students assigned to you.
  • Provide guidance and advice to students on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions. Communicate and consult with the parents or guardians of students after consultation with the relevant Key Stage coordinator / Head of Year.
  • Communicate and co-operate with persons or bodies outside the school and participate in meetings arranged for such purposes after consultation with the relevant Key Stage coordinator / Head of Year.

Assessments and Reports

  • Provide and contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual students and groups of students.

Teaching

Key Stage 2

All pupils have one 50 minute lesson per week in Key stage 2 with s science specialist and further science lessons with their class teacher.

Key Stage 3

All pupils currently have four 50-minute lessons of general Science per week. We track students regularly and set across half year groups, which are flexible and constantly under review.

Key Stage 4

In Y10 all pupils do core and additional science (six lessons per week), with pupils able to opt for triple science (three extra lessons per week), subject to their end of year 9 level. We follow the AQA specifications. Across key stage 4, all sciences are taught discretely in fixed blocks, by a subject specialist where the timetable allows. There are currently 42 pupils in Year 10 doing triple Science and only those achieving a high NC level in Year 9 are allowed to opt for Triple Science.

We have AS and A2 courses running in all disciplines, with two groups in year 12 for Biology and Chemistry and one for Physics. We follow the OCR specification for Biology and Chemistry, and AQA for Physics.

Requirements of the Teaching Post and Leadership

We assume that all candidates can teach outstanding and inspirational lessons at all levels.

Candidates should specify which subject or subjects they can offer to A-level. The ability to teach up to A-Level Chemistry and/ or Physicsis a requirement.

Accommodation on site may be available in return for boarding duties. No experience or understanding of boarding is required.
