JAMES MAY

Biography

James May is a motoring journalist who is best known as one of the presenters of BBC2's hugely successful ‘Top Gear’, which is now in its tenth series, co-presenting alongside Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson. He habitually refers to himself as "the other bloke off Top Gear". James is famous for finishing last in nearly all of the Top Gear challenges between the presenters, which has earned him the nickname "Captain Slow" among his co-presenters and fans.

He also presented BBC‘s 20th Century in the summer of 2007 and he has now completed two series of the fabulous BBC2's Oz & James's Big Wine Adventure.

Christmas 2005 saw James in his very own BBC2 special James May’s Top Toys, re-living his childhood: playing with machine guns, blowing up “Action Man” and recreating model train history……The show was a great success with a call for more solo projects.

James has also done extensive broadcast work and been a regular radio and TV presenter, including Breakfast TV, BBC Radio 2, The Boat Show, ITV1, as well as branching into the “world of music” as co-hoston BBC2’s Top of the Pops.

James is a much sought after motoring journalist and freelancer, writing for Top Gear Magazine and The Daily Telegraph and has contributed over the years to Car Magazine, The Scotsman, Country Life and various technology and travel titles. He has written a book called "May on Motors" which is a collection of columns from Telegraph Motoring, Scotland on Sunday, Car and Top Gear magazines

He holds a light aircraft private pilot's licence with VFR rating, which allowed him to fly a small Cessna 182 light aircraft in a Top Gear challenge. However, he lacked at that time his IFR rating, meaning that he could not fly at night, and was therefore unable to complete the challenge in the aircraft.

James has a wealth of corporate experience and is a very relaxed and professional presenter with a sharp dry wit and an exuberant personality, making him the ideal choice for after dinner speeches and corporate events.

James went to Oakwood Comprehensive School (now Oakwood Technology College) in Rotherham and graduated from Lancaster University with a degree in Music. He owns several cars, including a Bentley T2, a Range Rover, a Porsche 911, a Porsche Boxster S, and several bikes. May has a penchant for prestige cars like Rolls Royce and Bentley, or conversely simple basic cars.
