Hampshire Schools & the London 2012 Olympic Games

Using the inspiration of the 2012 Olympic Games to support the transformation of learning in Hampshire schools

A strategy with 6 aims.

Aim 1 – Sustain the influence of the sports college network.

Aim 2 – Promote the 7 Olympic & Paralympic Values.

Aim 3 – Develop & strengthen local, national and international links.

Aim 4 – Expand & embed a student leadership programme.

Aim 5 – Raise aspiration and as a consequence encourage higher achievement.

Aim 6 – 2012 inspired events.

Get Set – The LOCOG education programme for schools.

Schools are encouraged to be part of the programme by registering for Get Set and then to go a further step and join the GET SET NETWORK. Membership of the Network is the true measures of school engagement with London 2012 as school have to prove that they are using and planning to use the Olympic/Paralympic values in their curriculum.As at 13/10/2011 we have 230 schools in the Network including 70/70 secondary schools.

Only Kent have more schools in the Get Set Network than Hampshire in the whole of the UK.

Membership offers a number of key advantages including

  • Nominations for Olympic Torch Bearers
  • Free tickets to the Olympics & Paralympics
  • Entry to a monthly draw for visits to the Olympic park
  • Potential visits from Olympians
  • Use of exclusive Get Set Network branding

In September 2011 Get Set Goes Global will be launched designed at developing international links as schools are encouraged to adopt teams from different countries.

Hampshire 2012 Schools Legacy Conferences – Aim 6

In June 2011 the second 2012 Olympic conference for schools on how they can engage with the Games will be held at the Rose Bowl – Guest will be Steve Backley Olympic Javelin silver medallist from the Sydney Games. The 2010 conference was opened by David Hemery 1968 Olympic Champion and Derek Redmond 1991 World 4x400m relay Champion.

A number of ideas and cross curricular projects will be made available to both primary and secondary phases.

The Connaught School - ‘Be the Best you can be’ – Aim 5

Using the 21st Century Schools pilot project, the school have developed the programme further and modelled it for their own needs – based around using sport/the Olympics as an inspiration to raise aspiration and then attainment in the classroom.

The Hampshire Games – Hampshire Schools Games– Aim 6

June 2011 is the test event for the 2012 Hampshire mini Olympics incorporating the Youth/Parallel and Hampshire Schools Games. By moving the Games to the same date as the Hampshire Schools athletics championships, this event provides a centre piece in the stadium in Aldershot. In 2011 other schools events included tag rugby for primary schools and a cycling event with further events to be added in 2012. The Olympic mascot Wenlock attended this event

Personal Bests (Based on the Hackney Schools model) Primary Schools Years 4/5 – Aim 5

Pilot schemes have been run by Winchester District Council & their local SSP and have been a great success (2011 final at Winchester Stadium had 1,000 pupils participating – plans for 2012 are for an increase to 2,000 pupils ). As a consequence there are plans to roll the programme out across the county. This can be free standing or forming the physical activity challenge element of the ‘Be Inspired 4 Life ‘ a Hampshire written Olympic cross curricular project for both secondary and primary phases.

Plans to roll the project further are being considered by Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Havant, East Hants, Southampton, New Forest & Hart

‘Capture the Wave’ Schools Paralympic Conference – Solent University / HCC / Southampton CC– Aim 5

Friday 17th June 2011 Chamberlayne leisure Centre – Southampton. This is an event for schoolchildren with physical, sensory or learning difficulties in Hampshire & the IOW.

Legacy – This event was a great success and as a consequence we are looking at this becoming an annual event.

Rushlympics – Samuel Cody Special School & Sports College – Aims 2 & 5

Multi sport annual event incorporating the Olympic/Paralympic values

Hampshire Welcomes the World – Cultural Olympiad – 5 Music events to reflect the music of the 5 Olympic Continents – Aim 6

Collaboration between the Music & Arts Services to produce 5 music events around the county with significant participation from Hampshire schoolchildren – In addition to this and feeding into the events is a Composers Project inspired by the Olympic/Paralympic Values.

‘Be Inspired 4 Life’ Cross Phase Project – Aim 2

A cross curricular project based on the Olympic Games and the Olympic/Paralympic values addressing issues of PSHE, RRR, Citizenship , Healthy Eating and history. Designed for cross phase use it also includes a physical activity element based on Hackney Personal Bests to address childhood obesity in primary schools. A hard copy will be available to all schools with resources also being available on line. Running along side the project is a separate primary school project designed by Anton Junior School in AndoverAim 2. This is based on the stories of Olympians / the Olympic Values and is designed to operate across a ten day period. Hard copies will be available to all primary school also on line from Anton’s website.

Hampshire is one of a handful of authorities to produce an Olympic curriculum resource and through partnership working with other agencies external funding was secured for the project. Other counties are now interested in the project which will be made available for them to purchase.

The English Project – The Language of Sport -Aim 5

The English Project are staging an exhibition in the Discovery Centre in Winchester during May – July 2012. As part of this there will be a number of competitions for secondary schools inspired by the Olympic Games. The launch will be on 13th October 2011 on English Language day comprising of 7 main categories:

  • Young sports journalist/blogger
  • Young sports commentator/broadcaster
  • Young sports film maker
  • Young sports artist/illustrator inc photographer
  • Young sports historian
  • Young sports creative writer
  • Young tweeter

Visual Arts Project – Exhibition in the Great Hall -Aims5 & 6

There are plans for an exhibition of schools children’s artwork based on the Olympics/and or the Olympic values for June /July 2012 with the opportunity for the work to tour the county afterwards. The opening of the exhibition could also provide an opportunity for a music component from the Schools Composers project

School Composers Project – Aims 5 & 6

Lead by Hampshire Music service the composer’s project will work with as many schools in the county both primary and secondary on creating new musical pieces inspired by the Olympic values. Participation in the Arts exhibition and other events would provide opportunities to celebrate outcomes from this work

Impact – The leader’s Olympic project for secondary schools– LOCOG - Inspire Mark

A competition for secondary schools awarded LOCOGs badge of excellence – the Inspire Mark. Designed for schools to develop projects that will have an impact on their local communities inspired by the Olympics. A Dragons Den style final will be held in Winchester on 11th July 2012 with the winners hopefully being given tickets to the Paralympic games.18 secondary schools have now signed up to produce projects that will benefit their communities and will progress to a voting round by the residents of Hampshire (to be reduced to a final 5).

Hampshire is my Home – Primary Schools–HTAS – Aim 5

Using 18 personal profiles produced by our Hampshire Talented Athletes Scheme- as part of the Multi Cultural & Diversity Project. The profiles will be used in an established reading project for pupils in primary schools.

Hampshire Schools TV – Aim 5

A large number of Olympic related video clips have been prepared and formatted for use by Hampshire Schools to support learning in the classroom and are specifically linked to the schemes of work identified in the Anton School project

Havant Schools Games – June 2012 – Havant Rotary Club -Aim 6

Planned for June 25th -29th 2012 and organised by the Havant Rotary Club. A plan to engage all schools in the borough (49 schools including 3 FE colleges & 8 secondary) potentially a total of 18,000 children. This will be a multi sport event using a number of venues but centred on the Mountbatten Centre Portsmouth.
