MORE INFORMATION: To ensure that competitors have a positive experience at the Halton Technological Skills Competition, a competitor and their educator should review the scope document well in advance.

LOCATION: All contests at the 2016 Halton Skills are hosted onsite at Robert Bateman High School, Burlington, Ontario

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST:

• Provide Fashion Design students with an opportunity to apply their technical skills and creativity into the development of a marketable garment for the Fashion Industry
• Recognize outstanding students for their excellence in apparel applications and technology
• Evaluate each competitor’s preparation for employment in the competitive Fashion Industry
• Prepare for Provincial Level Competition

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED:

PRACTICAL 95 %

• The competitor will create an unlined pocketed vest for a young adult female

• mandatory components that must be maintained : neckline, shoulder length, armhole shape
• must be unlined
• front closure is sewn buttons and button holes (minimum 3 to maximum of 5)
• dart transfer or conversion

• an appropriate hem treatment

• Bring a technical drawing (in pencil) using the approved croquis (end of this document); include both front and back views
• Complete your Vest within the 7 hour alotted time
• All work will be done on site, except for the technical drawing, cutting of pattern pieces and cutting of fabric.
• Resumé
• Participate in a Job Skills Interview.
• Smile.

• Vest Pattern – to include vest front, vest back, collar (if applicable), front facing, back neck facing;
• Fabric
• Interfacing (fusible)
• Fabric – (lightweight if desired) for pocket lining
• Sewing machine (one per competitor)
• Thread to match
• Buttons
• Regular sewing foot
• Buttonhole Foot
• Masking tape to be used for name labels
• General pattern making and construction supplies: pencils, rulers, curves, scotch tape, straight pins, tape measure, scissors, shears, seam ripper, pressing tools (i.e. hams, press cloth, etc.)
• Iron
• Ironing board
• Safety glasses
• Résumé
• The following items are not permitted: embellishments, books, written notes, diagrams, directions or listening devices, paper, sewing machine attachments

Note: In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the

`Judging Criteria’ in the following order:

a) The highest score in the `Garment Construction’ component of the competition

b) The degree of difficulty in sewing construction

c) The highest score in `Draft/Pattern Development’ component of the competition

JUDGING INFORMATION:

A. Relation to Technical Drawing - 5 pts.

Technical drawing of your jacket design using croquis,

on 21.59 cm X 27.94 cm (8 1/2" X 11") white paper. You must have a front and

back view with all details shown on the technical drawing. DO NOT colour the

technical drawing.

B. Creativity & Suitability of the Design - 7 pts.

Your pattern must be for a pocketed vest, suitable for a young adult female. The pattern must include darts, and pockets.

C. Draft - 22 pts.

Ensure that your technical drawing matches your pattern.

The following are part of this evaluation: proportion, seam alignment (how well the pattern pieces fit together), 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) seam allowance, notches, hem allowances (correct hem allowances with all pieces of the vest matching), cutting out of the pattern carefully on the cutting lines (pattern pieces and fabrics must beprecut, before arriving at the competition), design details (ie. darts, pocket), labelling, neatness, completion.

The 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) seam allowance is included on the pattern pieces.

Include the following information on the pattern pieces:

Pattern pieces must be cut on cutting lines.

Make certain to place your competition number on every pattern piece.

Submission: After your jacket is completed, fold your pattern pieces, and place in the envelope with your competitor number on it.

D. Garment Construction - 48 pts.

Construct your vest from the pattern you provided at competition.

Garment must be finished; that includes button closures and hem.

The following are parts of this evaluation: pattern layout, seams, buttons, buttonholes, hem, design details and elements (may include but not limited to pleats, vents, gathers/ must include darts, pockets), facing; difficulty of design elements.

E. Appearance / Final Fit - 11 pts.

Pin your competition number to the garment.

Submit all remaining fabrics with garment.

Your Vest must match your technical drawing in regards to details and proportion. The fit and overall appearance of the garment will also be evaluated.

F. Safety – 2 pts.

Appropriate attire

Maintains safe work procedures.

G. Job Interview (duration 5 – 10 minutes) -5 pts.

To assist competitors in preparing for their eventual job searches, there is a ‘job interview’ incorporated into this contest. It is expected that the competitors will arrive with a résumé and be prepared for interview questions and discussion. Performance in the interview accounts for 5% of the individual’s overall mark.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY:

Eligibility Criteria:

Secondary students must:

• Be 21 years of age or younger as of December 31st in the competition year (2015).
• Compete in only one contest at the HTSC.
• Possess a Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status and be a resident of Ontario.

Other Rules and Regulations all competitors need to be aware of prior to attending the HTSC:

• During the contest, no one will have access to the contest site except the Technical Committee Members, Judges, Halton Skills staff and Competitors. Spectators, including teacher/advisors, will be provided a viewing area if possible.

Immediate disqualification may occur at the discretion of the judges if a competitor displays any one of the following:

• Acts inappropriately
• Shows disregard for the safety of themselves or those around them
• Breaks the established rules and regulations including:

oUses equipment or material that is not permitted

oDishonest conduct (cheating, plagiarism)

oSpeaks with those outside the contest area

oArrives to the contest site late

Sign-in for all contests will happen on the contest site the morning of the competition.

Registration must take place prior to the deadline of March 13, 2015.

CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS: Competitors are to be dressed in a clean and appropriate manner.

MEALS:

HaltonSkills will provide a basic lunch (pizza) and a beverage for competitors. Lunch will be confirmed closer to the competition; alternative meals will be provided (vegetarian, vegan). If the competitor has specific dietary needs, specific tastes or feels that they may require additional sustenance, it is recommended they bring the necessary food with them. If the competitor is part of a contest of a physical nature, it is highly recommended they bring additional snacks.

ANY FOOD BROUGHT TO THE VENUE MUST BE NUT FREE. ANY NUT PRODUCTS FOUND ON SITE WILL BE REMOVED.
