Halls of Residence Allocations Policy

This document provides an outline of the policy for the allocation of rooms in Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Halls of Residence along with the allocation of rooms in any private halls of residence where either an informal or formal nomination agreements exist.

Cardiff Metropolitan University endeavours to secure accommodation for all full time first year undergraduate students and first year EU and International students who wish to live in Halls of Residence. However, the University does not have sufficient places in its own Halls of Residence to guarantee a place to all those who wish to live in halls with the exception of those defined in the paragraph below.

Guarantees

Those guaranteed accommodation are:

  • Students aged 17 years old at the start of the Academic year – these students will wherever possible be placed in University owned Halls in line with the Policy Regarding Students or Employees Who Are Under 18 Years Old
  • Those students who have been in the care of a Local Authority immediately prior to starting at Cardiff Metropolitan University – these students will wherever possible be placed in University owned Halls and may remain in halls over the Summer Vacation period and in their second and third year if required.
  • Students with disabilities who require suitably adapted accommodation – these students may remain in halls in their second and third year if required.
  • All single International students from non EU countries in their first year of study at UWIC providing they complete the application procedure set out by the International Office before the allocation deadline set in that procedure.

Halls of Residence Allocation Criteria

Priorities

The criteria for prioritising are defined below:

  • Unconditional Firm first year undergraduate students who have not previously lived in Halls of Residence
  • Date of receipt of Application forms into the Accommodation Office – halls will be allocated in date order of application
  • Distance to travel to Cardiff – those students living in the surrounding local authority areas will be held on a waiting list until vacancies occur. The areas included are:
  • Cardiff City Council
  • Vale of Glamorgan Council
  • Newport City Council
  • Rhondda Cynon Taff Council
  • Torfaen Council
  • Caerphilly Council
  • Merthyr Council
  • Bridgend Council
  • Students with exceptional medical or social circumstances. Supporting evidence must be provided from a suitably qualified professional in the relevant field.

All offers are made on the basis of a full Academic year contract – currently 40 weeks. Any students on placement or participating in overseas exchanges during their studies will only be offered accommodation on a Semester basis and will be charged for a full semester. This is also conditional upon a replacement being found for their room during the placement / exchange period on a “back to back” basis.

No guarantee is made that an applicant will be allocated accommodation in their first or subsequent preferences of halls due to the high demand for accommodation.
