Halloween Means Holy Evening , and Takes Place on the 31St October

Halloween

Halloween means "holy evening", and takes place on the 31st October. Although it is a much more important festival in the United States than Britain, it's celebrated by many people in the UK. It's connected with witches and ghosts.

At parties people dress up in strange costumes and pretend they are witches, ghosts, bats, clowns, black cats or some funny animals. People wear masks. So we don't know who is who and try to guess who is behind the masks.

They cut horrible faces in a pumpkin and put a candle inside. The light shines through the holes. These pumpkins are called jack-o'-lanterns.

There are some special things to eat and to drink: apple juice, popcorn, caramel apples, candies and oranges. The party is always good fun.

A favourite game at the Halloween party is ducking for apples. Apples swim in the water in a big bowl or a bucket. You can get them with a fork or with teeth, but without using your hands.

Children dressed in white sheets, often in groups, knock on doors of different people's homes. They shout out a 'trick or a treat' (проказаилиугощение). If people at the doors give them something nice, a 'treat', they go away. However, if you don't, they play a 'trick' on you, such as making a lot of noise or spilling flour on your front doorstep!

Here is a poem about Halloween.

Everything is black and gold,
Black and gold, tonight:
Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon,
Yellow candlelight. / Black and gold, black and gold,
Nothing is between –
When the world turns black and gold,
Then, it's Halloween.
