Easy Reading

/ Use the last book from the previous session.
·  Help students to work out unknown words from meaning: “What would make sense there? What would look right and sound right?”
·  Get students to check any errors: “Did that make sense?” “You said ______. Does that look right?” “Can we say it that way?”
·  Get students to reread parts for fluency and phrasing.

New book

/ Orientation:
·  The title of this book is Oceans, Seas and Coasts. When we think about the title and look at the picture of the front cover what predictions do we have about what this book might be about? What type pf text is it likely to be? What do you expect to see in one of these texts? What is the name of the author? What type of text will be this? What do you know about oceans, seas and coasts? Have you ever been to the coast or been out on the ocean?
·  Title Page: read the title again. Why has the illustrator chosen this photo for this page?
·  Contents Page: Why has the author chosen to have a contents page? How can this help a reader? What page would you find information about the changing coastline on?
·  P4/5: What is the heading on this page? What would you expect to find in an introduction about “Oceans, seas and coastlines”? The container ship is related to information on oceans because..
·  P6/7: The heading is oceans and the pictures on these pages give us information on…
·  P8/9: What type of photo is the one on page 8? What information can this give us that a normal photo wouldn’t? What is unusual about the photos of people floating in the water on page 9?
·  P10/11: Describe the story from these photographs.
·  P12/13: The heading is called “Islands”. How do these photos and diagrams give information on islands?
·  P14/15: What information do you get about how the land meets the sea/ ocean?
·  P16/17: What is wrong with the seal? What is happening to the ship? What are the pictures showing us?

Introduce new words and concepts: high frequency words; pack & communicate
Prompt children to practise strategies.
Each child reads the text independently.
