GUIDANCE COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Rockhurst High School

The Position:

As members of the Rockhurst Guidance Department, counselors provide a comprehensive guidance program which meets the needs of their assigned students in grades 9-12. Counselors promote and enhance academic, personal, social, religious* developmentin a faith based, Jesuit college preparatory environment.

Reports To:Guidance Department Chair

  1. Responsibilities/Duties – help develop and manage a comprehensive school counseling program.

A.Begin to facilitate the integration of the guidance curriculum into the

educational curricula.

B. Envision and plan developmental guidance lessons for potential classroom

use and in large groups.

C. Select topics and resources consistent with school identifiedobjectives.

D. Conduct orientation activities for students new to the school.

E. Provide grade level—middle school through postsecondary--transitional activities.

F. Assist students with developing a four-year educational plan.

G. Provide high school-to-college guidance activities using resources.

H. Interpret standardized test results.

I. Assist the administration with the school testing program.

J.Consult with and serve as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents

regarding the developmental needs of students.

K.Assist and/or conduct in-service programs for faculty and staff.

  1. Delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program
  1. Guidance Curriculum:
  1. Provide leadership and collaborate with other departments in a school wideintegration of the “Grad at Grad” growth indicators in the school curriculum.
  2. Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-orientated activities to meet student needs and school mission and vision.
  3. Incorporates into the counseling program the life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century.
  1. Individual Student Planning:
  1. Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in response to

identified needs of individuals and groups of students.

2. Conduct and facilitate conferences with teachers, students, andparents.

3. Model appropriate behavior with student, parent, and colleague

interactions.

  1. Maintain records to document interactions, interventions, anddecisions.
  1. Preventive and Responsive Services:
  1. Refer students and their parents to community agencies, programs, or

specialists as appropriate.

2. Maintain a comprehensive list of in-school and community resources.

3. Consult and coordinate with in-school and community agencies.

4. Cooperate with school staff members for appropriate student

placement, e.g., Magis Program, College Prep, Honors/AP Program.

  1. Help identify students and develop an educational program for students whofall above the Magis Level and below our traditional College Preparatory curriculum.

6. Conduct or provide opportunities for parent education programs.

7. Participate and cooperate with the school-based crisis team’s policies and

Directives.

  1. System Support:
  1. Participate in the evaluation and potential revision of the school guidance

Program.

  1. Provide appropriate information to school personnel related to the school

counseling program.

  1. Review on a three year cycle the guidance program using the National

Study of School Evaluation self study model and JSEA models.

4. Help plan the guidance program calendar.

5. Participate in developing a budget to support the guidanceprogram.

  1. Accountability:

1. Maintain confidentiality.

2. Maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines.

3. Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely anddependable

manner.

  1. Assist students with course selections which are the most challenging and

appropriate for graduation requirements and college plans.

5. Operate within the established school procedures andpolicies.

6. Keep informed of current professional trends.

7. Pursue professional growth – (attend a minimum of one workshop every

two years for either college or continuing education credits).

  1. Help each student develop self-knowledge in an educational setting through an understanding of one’s abilities, limitations and motivations.
