GROW QUESTIONS

Goal
(What do you want / trying to achieve) / The goal is the end point where the coachee wants to be. It has to be defined in such a way that the coachee is very clear when they have achieved it. (SMART). (And is it appropriate for job / team / unit / career objectives?) (See Guide to Writing SMART objectives.)
Possible questions:
What development objective do you want to achieve this year?
What skill or capability area do you want to work on?
How does this fit with longer term goals / thesis / publication?
How will this benefit your research / teaching?
How does this fit with overall project objectives?
How does this fit with your career aspirations?
If you are successful what will it allow you to move towards?
Reality
(What is happening) / Next, ask your coachee to describe their current reality. This is an important step: People often try to set or reach a goal without fully considering their starting point, and miss some information that they need in order to reach their goal effectively. As your coachee tells you about their current reality, the solution may start to emerge.
Possible questions:
What approaches have you tried to date?
What aspects of teaching the course do you find most challenging?
What results did you get?
What worked / been productive? What do you think has been helpful about these activities?
What solutions have you tried?
Who have you asked for help?
What resources have you used?
What barriers have you encountered?
Options
(What could you do) / Once you and the coachee have explored the current reality, it's time to determine what is possible – meaning all of the possible options for reaching the objective. Encourage the coachee to identify / explore as many good options as possible. By all means offer your own suggestions (with permission) but let the coachee offer suggestions first and let them do most of the talking. Try to guide in right direction but not make decisions for them.
Possible questions:
What does the literature suggest about how to go about undertaking this work?
Who have you talked to who might have encountered similar challenges in the classroom?
What do you think the options are?
What are the pros / cons of the options?
How might you find options?
How have you approached similar problems in the past? What could apply towards solving this problem?
Who else (apart from me) could you ask for support?
If you were me, what do you think I would suggest?
On a scale of 1 – 10 how close are you now to your goal? What would move your one step closer?
Will
(What will you do / Way forward) / By examining the current reality and exploring the options, the coachee will now have a good idea of how they can achieve their goal. The final step is to get the coachee to commit to specific actions in order to move forward towards the goal.
Possible questions:
In order to move things forward what is the first step you need to take?
When are you going to do it?
What could stop you taking this first step? How might you overcome this barrier?
What will happen if you do?
What will happen if you don’t?
What support do you need from me?
On a scale of 1 – 10, how committed are you to taking the identified action(s)? (If not at least an 8 unlikely to happen?)
How will effectiveness of coaching be evaluated? / Set review dates (according to capabilities of coachee and ambitiousness of goals)
