YEAR 10/11 BOYS & GIRLS BADMINTON COUNTY FINAL

WHEN:TBC JANUARY 2016

WHERE:TBC

TIME:10:30 AM – 4:00 PM

COMPETITION INFORMATION:

In partnership with Badminton England, the Greater Manchester Local Organising Committee proudly present the Year 10/11 Greater Manchester Schools Badminton Competition. This event forms part of Badminton England’s Center Parcs National Schools Championships.

The event is aimed at encouraging more young people to participate in and enjoy competitive Badminton and it is hoped it will also be used as a catalyst for ongoing participation and development. Although a team based competition, it also encourages players to develop individually as participants will play both singles and doubles matches. Schools will need to register players to confirm their attendance at the competition.

The School Games competition is open to all schools; however they must have qualified through their local SGO area/borough heats in order to progress to the County Final. The competition follows a simple pathway as follows:

1. Local SSP/Borough Events

Secondary Schools within an SGO area/Borough will be encouraged to enter the first stage of the competition at a venue local to their school. The top two schoolsfrom the Borough will then be invited to the School Games County Final.

2. County Final

This stage of the competition will be organised by Badminton England and will comprise of the two winning teams from each Borough.

3. Regional Final

This final will be organised by Badminton England and will consist of the best teams from Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire.

4. National Final

The best schools from across England will compete against one another to be crowned National champions.

STANDARD RULES:

Age Groups

All players must be in school years 10 and 11.If an ineligible player(s) is/are fielded their scores will be discounted. Girls and boys will compete separately.

It is suggested that an individual School may enter up to 3 teams per event, however the number of teams accepted will be at the discretion of the SGOP/Borough organiser.

If a school has entered 2 or more teams then the ‘1st’ or ‘A’ Team shall be considered the strongest. A player may only play for one team per round.

A player may play up into a stronger team provided that they have not already played for another team in that same round.

A player may not play down into a weaker team if they have already represented a stronger team in a match or have been nominated for a stronger team.

Players participating in the county final must have represented their school in at least one previous round. Appeals for a new player(s) to represent the school in the final must be made in writing to the competition organiser.

Team Composition

Teams will consist of 5 players with any 4 taking part in each match.

The 5th player can be used in any matchand not just as a reserve in case of injury. That player must play the entirety of that match (eg. Both games) this can then be changed when they play their next opponent. If a player is injured during a game then that game is conceded, but the 5th player may be substituted for further games in that match.

Court/Equipment Requirements

All matches should be played on a standard, full size badminton court.

Regular shuttles shall be used throughout. Wilson nylon shuttles (blue – medium speed) are the Official Shuttle of the Championships. Shuttles for all rounds will be supplied by BADMINTON England.

Competition Format

At an SGO/Borough level, the organiser will decide on the format i.e. ‘home & away’ leagues, Central Venue festivals, stand alone tournament.

Each match will consist of 5 games: 2 x singles and 3 x doubles, with each player playing 2 games. This is shown in the playing format for a match below:

1st Game: Singles (No.1 ranked player in the team)

2nd Game: Doubles (the3 and4 players not selected for a singles game)

3rd Game: Singles (No. 2 ranked player chosen for singles)

4th Game: Doubles (first singles player + either one of non-singles players)

5th Game:Doubles (second singles player + the other non-singles player)

If round robin formats are adopted, Group winners will be decided as follows:

  • Most matches won
  • Most points won
  • If 2 teams are tied, the winner of the match between them
  • If 3 or more teams are tied, the team with greater games difference
  • If 2 teams are then tied, the winner of the match between them
  • If 3 or more teams are still tied, then the team with greater points difference
  • If 2 teams are then tied, the winner of the match between them
  • If teams are still tied, then the results will be reviewed following the match by the Center Parcs

National Schools Badminton Championships Policy Group.

Duration of matches/ Competition Scoring

A suggested format has been produced by Badminton England to ensure a level of consistency; however there can be a degree of flexibility in running SGO/Borough level competition. Once again, organisers will decide on this on this locally.

Each game will be 1 set to 21 pointsusing Rally Points scoring, with no extended scoring or setting (unless otherwise stated).

Alternatively, for the first (SGO) and second (County) rounds fewer points may be played with a short set option being adopted (minimum of 11 points). This may be more appropriate when multiple schools are taking part at one venue &/or time is restricted.
