Graduate Student Association Research Award Application

Graduate Student Association Research Award Application

1. Introduction

The purpose of this award is to allow graduate students to complete thesis work when project funds may be in jeopardy or non-existent. The Graduate Student Association (“GSA”) Research Award is awarded based on professional financial need and merit and will be reviewed by a committee of peers and faculty. Applicants must be enrolled in the Graduate School, University of Maryland, Baltimore as full time degree-seeking PhD students. These funds are for use ONLY for supplies toward the research of the awardee, as defined by the University of Maryland, Baltimore for the awardee. This award is not for use for salaries, books, or anything that falls out of the realm of research supplies essential for the student to whom the award is granted. If there is any question as to whether an item can be considered a supply, the issue MUST be brought before the Professional Development Committee. The Committee will decide on whether the item can be purchased. Avenues for purchasing items will be determined based on the needs of the awardee. Reimbursement for supplies that are not sanctioned by the GSA or not purchased via the predetermined avenues is not guaranteed.

No other person in the research group, including the advisor, may use the award funds. The total amount awarded per semester per student is one thousand dollars ($1000). Awards will be given out on a semesterly basis. The award must be spent within one (1) year from time granted or funds will be reverted back to the GSA.

Please attach no more than a two-page (total), single-spaced research proposal. Include specific aims, relevance, any preliminary data found by student, research plan and time estimated for completion. The proposal should be written so scientists outside of this particular field of research can understand the proposed work. Applications will be judged based on Identification of Hypothesis, Outline of Specific Aims, and Experimental Design, as well as Determination of Need and Application of Funding.
