Goodesy Thunders Home For Group Win

By Peter Davis

Thunder, lightning, torrential rain and an unstoppable forcecalled Goodesy was the main fare on Gold Plate night at Bulli last night.

The Group Two feature, while missing the immense talent of Geelong Cup hero Gripen Bale assembled an elite field and, from box-rise, there was no place for the meek.

Siblings Patrick Dudley and Hurricane Luke were first to break the line and, for the opposition, Goodesy’s clean start proved critical.

While in front after 20m from box three, Hurricane Luke was unable to clear Patrick Dudley (box two) while Disintergrate – along the inside – and Dyna Blade were on their heels.

Goodesy was lurking wide and about to launch an attack.

“I was very happy with the way he began…he and Drover [box] eight did not hinder each other and that allowed him to gather momentum,” handler Minnie Finn said.

“The race was run pretty much how we thought it might have been but it’s another thing for everything to go okay.”

At the first turn, Goodesy ($2.90) swept around his rivals to move quickly from fifth to second and had leader Patrick Dudley in his sights.

Into the straight, the black dog showed his genuine quality, shot clear and scored by 3½ lengths in a quite remarkable 26.19s – easily the best of the night.

“The rain certainly made the track sticky to walk on, so I don’t know how much it affected the dogs. It was certainly not fast and crusty-like,” Minnie added.

While Goodesy’s winning time was impressive, it paled in comparison to his own final section which was posted at 6.48s.

“We were talking with friends last night and no one can recall a faster run home time over 472m…he’s really an impressive dog.”

While Goodesy was supreme, his sister Little Sparkle, in finishing second, was far from disgraced.

The only bitch in the field, Little Sparkle ($6.00) was caught up in a pack at the first turn but dropped onto the rails mid-race and rallied strongly in the latter stages.

She, however, made no ground on her big brother but the quinella would have delighted the Chappelow family who raced the pair’s dam Frosty Fruits with so much success.

Early leader Patrick Dudley ($23.30) battled gamely to finish third, just ahead of Goodesy’s kennelmate Om Shanti. The luckless Hurricane Luke followed.

And of Goodesy’s next essay?

“We just don’t know what we will do next. He’s not suited at The Gardens, so the National Derby is not on the agenda.”

The Bulli Gold Plate is Goodesy’s initial group race win but it’s likely it won’t be his last.

Injury has been a companion in the past but the son of Collision is on a roll now and it’s full steam ahead into 2010.
