Book Order: Book orders are going out on Monday and they usually take a week to come in the mail. Thank you for placing your book orders, it helps our class get free books which the kids love, especially for their “Fun Friday” take home reading books! Don’t forget that you will receive a certificated to pick out a free book just for placing your order online too. (The information and directions were sent home earlier this week on purple paper.)

Golden Spoon: The first week of school we talked about cleaning up their area after lunch and milk time. Each time the class picked up they earned a star on their class chart. Well guess what???? They earned their reward! They got to have lunch in their classroom with their rockstar teacher. Hee hee! I am very proud of them! Way to go first graders! Here is a picture of me and my groupies! J

Science: This week the students started a unit about habitats. They listened to a book about different habitats, wrote and researched facts about cheetahs for English, and made a book about an animal of their choice. Next week we will continue to study animal habitats. They have information attached to their newsletter about a diorama project which is due next Thursday.

Reading: Next Wednesday’s comprehension story will be Sweet Potato Pie. For our reading skill will review cause and effect. Here are the sight words from list 2.6; by, eat, sing, stop, and them.

Spelling: Students made a spider and flies teaching tool this week and wrote their words in shaving cream on their desk. We also talked about making nouns plural with an “s”. Next week we will continue to work on the short o sound. Here are the spelling words from list 2.6 for next week; hot, not, got, mop, hop, top, eat, stop, sing and sings.

Math: This week the students continued to work on memorizing their doubles facts. We chant and work with them daily. They cut out the doubles flashcards from 1+1 up to 10+10 and put them in their flashcards zipper pouch in their rocks binder. We have also played around the world, memory, and practiced them with a partner. They especially enjoyed going a doubles discovery hunt in the hallways. I put up QR codes around the building and had the students take a turn scanning them with our class iPad. They had to answer the doubles math problem and tell whether it was a doubles or doubles plus one number sentence. I would like them to review their flashcards when possible…on the way to the store, to school, etc. They have done so well starting to master them already!

Next week we will work on practicing addition facts to 10, follow the addition rule on charts, and problem solving/writing a number sentence. They will have a test on Thursday and start chapter 7: Subtraction strategies. Their first subtraction strategy is to practice counting back to subtract 1 and 2. Here is this week’s homework. I made a mistake on last week’s list!

English: In our writing goals we reviewed three things to write a sentence. We added a fourth expectation to our writing goals; check your sentence for random capitals. This week the students listened to and wrote a sentence to respond to their listening story SkippyJon Jones in Mummy Trouble. The students and I also researched facts about cheetahs on the internet. We were able to discover that a cheetah’s habitat is in the grasslands of Africa, they can run up to 61 miles per hour, and they are endangered. The students chose one fact to write about in their science journals.

Next week we will work on labeling diagrams and work with interrogative (question) sentences.

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mrs. Parlier
