The Get Ahead School Leavers' Programme offers those leaving school or college the chance to work at the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). They’ll be playing their part in the biggest show on Earth.

About the programme

The London 2012 Get AheadSchool Leavers'Programme is a fantastic opportunity to secure a job on one of the most exciting projects.

Successful applicants will firstly enjoy a special induction into the organisation, meeting the faces of the people behind the Games and learning the ropes of what it takes to organise such an event.

A range of business administration roles are on offer in departments such as Technology, Human Resources, Games Services and Games Operations. As well as learning new skills from world class people you will study with a local college, so you can gain a recognised NVQ qualification.

How do candidates apply?

Application for the Get Ahead School Leavers' Programme is through an online application form.

There are some basic requirements candidates will need to meet in order to apply for the Get Ahead School Leavers' Programme. If they do not meet these requirements then their application will not be submitted for review.

What is the application deadline?

Applications will open from Monday 17th January 2011 and will close at the end of February 2011.

How do candidates qualify for the Get Ahead School Leaver Programme?

To qualify, candidates must:

  • be in possession of a valid UK or EU passport or have the right to work in the UK;
  • have achieved five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C or above, including Maths and English;
  • have/or are expecting to achieve at least two A2 level qualifications (or equivalent) this academic year;
  • have gained some work experience;
  • have been involved in community-based volunteering programmes;
  • have working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • have a passion for sport, culture and everything the London 2012 Games represents;
  • display a high level of enthusiasm and a willingness and ability to learn on the job; and
  • be a self-starter

What will the selection process be like for the Get Ahead School Leaver Programme?

Step 1: Apply on line (from Monday January 17th 2011 to end of February 2011)

On the application form candidates will be asked to provide general information, such as contact details and education/work experience. We will also ask some questions to assess their suitability for the programme.

Step 2: If we decide to proceed with their application following a review, candidates will be invited to attend an assessment centre (during March/April 2011) at the LOCOG offices in Canary Wharf, London.

Step 3: If successful at assessment centre candidates will be invited for a final interview (during April/May 2011).
Step 4: Following the final interview, we will contact the candidate with our final decision.
Can candidates apply by sending in a CV and covering letter?

We will only accept applications that are made online on the London 2012 website.

How long will the programme last for?

The programme will start in August 2011 and run through to September 2012.

Do candidates have to live in London to be able to apply?

Candidates do not need to live in London to be eligible to apply for Get Ahead School Leaver Programme. However, if they are successful in their application, they will need to be able to commute to our offices.

What are the working hours?

The standard working hours will be 9am–5pm. Candidates must also bear in mind that our ability to deliver a successful Games depends on us all being available to work when the need arises. As a result, they may be required to work long hours on occasions to ensure we deliver against tight deadlines.

If candidates are looking to go to college/university full-time; can they work at London 2012 in the evenings or at weekends?

No, this is a full time role and it will not be possible to combine this role with a full time college or university course

Will candidates be paid?

Yes. If successful, candidates will be offered a competitive salary along with a range of health and well-being benefits.

What types of jobs are there?

We will have a range of office-based entry level positions within various departments.

Where are the jobs located?

Our offices are based in Canary Wharf, East London, and are separate to the Olympic Park, however as we move closer to Games time candidates may be working in a role that requires them to be based in a competition or non competition venue.

What opportunities are there to study whilst working at London 2012?

The programme offers a mandatory NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration. Not only will candidates gain invaluable experience but also a recognised qualification by the end of the Games.

Will you pay for candidate’s accommodation?

Accommodation costs should be covered by candidates and salaries have been calculated to reflect this.

Do you reimburse any expenses accumulated during the recruitment process?

For those candidates who are travelling from outside of London we will cover reasonable travel costs to attend assessment centres or interviews.

What provisions do you make for students with disabilities?

LOCOG is actively committed to the employment and career development of people with disabilities and we therefore judge applicants on their ability and nothing else. There is a section on the application form where candidates can tell us if they need additional help at any stage of the recruitment process.

How much holiday will candidates have and when can they take leave from work?

LOCOG staff will receive 20 days holiday pro rata during 2011 and 2012.
