Freestyle heats will be run in groups of 5 paddlers in the Muncher. Each paddler is allowed 3 rides, with the best two counting. A short whistle will go at 30 seconds and a longer whistle will go at 45 seconds. The paddler must then leave the feature as soon as possible. Paddlers should be ready to drop onto the feature after the other paddle’s ride is finished. If you drop down then please get out of your boat immediately in the river left eddy, walk up the island and launch from the island. Carpet is there for those with carbon boats.
Each paddler can only be scored each move once during the ride (bonuses may be added by repeating the move). You may score moves on the left and the right. There will be paddlers in each heat of mixed ability, gender and age. Each paddler should be supportive of others in their heat. Try and encourage others to go for new moves that you don’t think they have scored.
Two judges will be scoring the heats using ICF rules. Have a look at the scribe sheet before you start the competition to ensure you can maximise your points score. Normal bonus rules apply.
The novice jam session will be run more informally using the youth freestyle rules. This includes moves such as paddle spins and air guitars and rolls. One judge will score this. As with the main competition; support the other paddlers. A couple of rescue boaters and bank support people (with BAs on) will be required. Each move will be scored once so go for as many moves as possible. This will be run at the very bottom of the course.

Each paddler will be given ride to do their biggest trick possible as well as the most end. If you flush during the ride and retain the eddy paddle back into the feature once. Each move will be scored out of 100. Your score will be shown to you on a whiteboard at the end of each ride. In this event we are looking for the most impressive skills. Standing up in your boat while doing a paddle spin is far more impressive than a big loop! Ends should be above 45 degrees. Splitwheels and trickywoos are allowed but will not score any more points than a cartwheel. The number of ends you scored will be shown to you on a whiteboard at the end of the competition. Please leave the feature promptly after your ride has finished.

Briefing Info and Notes to Organisers:

The Boater X will have heats and finals depending on the numbers. Everybody should gather at the top of the course, the starters will then decide how the heats will be run depending on the numbers. This will be communicated to the finish judges via the radios. The course is from above the inlet gate to the bottom pool below the washing machine wave. Once the competitors have finished their heat they should return quickly to the top of the course to wait instructions on the next event. Safety is paramount here, do not remove your hands from your paddle (or you will disqualified) and do not use your paddle to push or hit other boats/people. The club championships is a one boat event therefore the event which was used in the freestyle should be used for the boater X also.
