Dear McLean 6th Families,

On behalf of the staff at McLean 6th grade Center, I am proud to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year. We are looking forward to a collaborative partnership with you to ensure our children achieve at their highest potential. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know it is a role we take seriously. We are honored you have entrusted us with your children.

Moving to middle school is an educational milestone for the student and their families. We are here to guide you both through that process. One of the things that we have put in place to guide this transition is a class period we call “Genius Hour”. On your child’s schedule it will be titledTarget Reading or Enhanced Math.Although it has that title, it is not the course that will be taught. It will be an enrichment piece they need. The faculty spent many hours collaborating and developing our Genius Hour over the summer. It is based on the FWISD Learning model which encourages creativity, research, communication, reflection, and growth. This model, coupled with the transitional aspects of secondary education and the uniqueness of a sixth grade center, is the inspiration for this unique course. Genius hour will focus on skills to organize their time, how to use their planners, learning how take notes, and form study groups. It will also focus on relationships by creating communities of trust in order to share and discuss concerns and fears that are part of the adolescent social development. We know all these skills will take them far beyond these walls and will support their growth as they become career and college ready. I am excited about this unique opportunity this year, and I know you will be too.

Look for more specific information regarding this course to come home with your child in the coming weeks. I will share things they are working on through our webpage, email blast, and our Remind.

In closing, we want to share that this is going to be a great year! Your child is going to continue toblossom into incredible little humans they are becoming. We look forward to sharing in this journey with you.

Our doors are open, and it is my sincere honor as the principal of the school to serve this community with leadership. Please come by to visit with me. I am here to help and support in any way I can.

Sincerely,

Karen Brown, Principal
