Dear Friends

Mendelssohn on Mull Festival

Preparations are well in hand for the 2016 festival and Richard has sent us this summary of the

programme:

This year's Festival features much glorious music, as always.

A little more Mendelssohn than usual, with the inclusion of the transcription of the Hebrides Overture, commissioned from Jonathan Cohen for the 2009 Festival, and a quartet and a quintet; the very rare first quintet by Dvorak, his Op. 1, and one by Brahms; and, after a gap of a few years, performances of the work some have called the greatest piece of chamber music: the astounding Quintet in C major by Schubert. Its transcendent slow movement will feature in the concert in Iona Abbey, which will also include a discovery Levon has made: a lament for the bombing of Coventry written by Vilem Tausky, known as a composer and conductor of light music, who was part of the Czech fighting force based in Leamington. This year we are changing some venues round too, with a return to the Mull Theatre, and an evening concert in Dervaig.

Please bear in mind that the new ferry fares (reduced from around £108 for a car and two passengers to £32) is expected to lead to dramatically increased traffic on the island. Although more ferries have been scheduled, it means the roads will be busier, so the journeys on single track roads are expected to take longer, and accommodation will be in short supply, so please book early.

In the last two years we have offered Friends the opportunity of sponsoring a concert, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, to commemorate a Friend who is no longer able to attend, or to promote a cause or a business. For a donation of £300 or more we provide programme cards with a photograph and words of your choice, which are issued to all attendees at the concert. Please let me know if this would be of interest to you.

Finally,it helps us if you pay your Friends subscription in advance of the festival, and we can reclaim a further 25% from the government if you let us know that gift aid applies. (a gift aid declaration is attached, in case you have not already signed one).

Please send cheques made payable to Sound Waves SCIO to me, Jan Richardson, 23 Rudham Stile Lane, Fakenham Norfolk. NR21 8JN Or you can pay online to our bank account: Sound Waves SCIO 82-68-18 40513343 – an email letting us know you have done this is helpful.

Thank you for your continued support. Our Friends contribute more than 50% of our income and this enables us to provide a unique opportunity for talented young professionals to play alongside established musicians in the glorious setting of the Inner Hebrides. By all means join us if you can, but if you can’t please help ensure we can come back again next year.
