Freshmen—Link Crew Meeting August 17, 2016

  1. Introduce yourself and your grade to any students new to your group. Have freshmen introduce themselves, too.
  2. Go around the circle and “check-in” with each individual, one-at-a-time. Ask any of the following:
  3. How’s your year started?
  4. Are you having any issues?
  5. What’s been the best part so far?
  6. What has been the most difficult part so far?
  7. What makes high school better/most different from middle?
  8. What are your latest worries?
  9. What are you doing for lunch everyday (you’d be surprised how many don’t eat)?
  10. How much homework do you have?
  11. What is the one thing you’d change about your day if you could?
  12. Remind them they had their class meeting last Thursday.
  13. Ask them if they know how to access the student handbook. (NIHS webpage, Student Resources tab, 2015-2016 Student Handbook). Tell them they really should read it. Seriously.
  14. Tell them you want to make sure they know about some of the main rules and expectations on our campus, to make their year easier. Tell them you wish someone had sat you down and made sure you knew this stuff—it would have saved you some hardship!!!
  15. Dress code is a big deal here! They will get sent to the SRC if they are out of code and no one can bring them a change of clothes.
  • Shorts/shirts/dresses have to be AT LEAST halfway between the hip and knee. If it is shorter than that, even with leggings under, they’ll get sent home. Soffe and athletic shorts like those are considered too short—don’t even bother.
  • Shirts cannot be sleeveless, show your back, belly, cleavage line, or underwear.
  • If they wear leggings/yoga pants—skin tight to knee with no back pockets—they are out of dress code unless what they have over them comes to middle of their leg (halfway between hip and knee).
  • Hole in their jeans are allowed ONLY if hole is lower than halfway between hip and knee.
  • They will get their cell phone taken away and locked up in the front office IF they

have it out or it makes any sounds between 8:05—3:05. Don’t have it out between classes or at lunch. Just listening to music counts as having it out, and it will get taken. The first time it is taken, they can get it back that day once the final bell rings. However, the second time it is taken, it stays in office til the end of the next school day. If thesecond offense is on Friday, they cannot get it back til the end of the day Monday. DON’T HAVE THEM ON OR OUT FROM 8:05—3:05. PERIOD.

  1. Avoid PDA—it makes others totally uncomfortable! Only affection allowed is hand-holding or side-armed hugs.
  2. Get to class on time before the bell. 3 tardies = 1 absence. 4 tardies = a writeup for a class skip. Any absences over 6 in a semester they have to come back to school to make up, minute for minute, after 3:05, on Saturday mornings, or over their summer break—YUCK!!! Total torture!!!
  3. Missing work = “0” = a real class failure. Your teachers will no longer just pass you. You have to earn it by actually doing your assignments now.
  4. Do not pass in lunch line. There is plenty of time to eat. Passing will get you in trouble with admin OR upperclassmen, which is probably worse.
  5. Social media posts really do get investigated here. Watch yourself.
  6. Profanity of any kind—even loosely joking in the halls—results in a full-blown write-up. Have more respect for yourself, and don’t lower yourself to rough talk.
  7. Go to events, especially home football, volleyball, soccer, or basketball games. Dress up!!! Sit in the student section!!! (But don’t paint yourself up. Or wear face masks. And no signs. But come anyway—it’s fun to scream!)
  1. Don’t let this time become a gripe session. SMILE! Advise them to smile. Meet new folks by asking questions of others, smiling, making eye contact. Encourage them to join some type of group on campus . . . a sport, a club (art, drama, FFA, etc.)
  2. YES, AND . . . FAKE IT ‘TIL YA MAKE IT;)! Sit in between trouble and face it down with a friendly smile!!!
