Bournville is a growing churchright next to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory on the outskirts of Birmingham where we are committed to reaching more young people.

We are seeking to appoint a part-time Youth Worker (16 hours/week) for our church and community centre from December 2016. The role involves working alongside Clergy, volunteers and our Children & Families Missioner to focus on the following areas:

  • Developing and growing our church youth programme (Sunday morning and one evening) to encourage the spiritual growth of 11-18 year olds within St Francis Church;
  • Developing and growing the open youth clubs (All4One and Youth Café) eveningsfor the St Francis Youth and Community Centre;
  • Developing and growing a newarea in the life of the local community relating to young people;
  • Recruiting, training and supporting volunteers to assist with the youth work;
  • Ensuring that the Church and Centre’s Safeguarding policy is adhered to at all times and maintaining high standards in youth work in the parish and community.

To fulfil the criteria of the job description there is a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) that the post is filled by a Christian. Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references and enhanced DBS certification.

We are looking for a creative person with a firm Christian faithwhich they are able to express imaginatively and engagingly with young people. They will have some experience in youth work and are comfortable and flexible in planning programmes, recruiting and training volunteers and leading teams. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with passion to see young people grow. We would anticipate that that the successful applicant will become part of our worshipping community at St Francis Bournville.

Employer: Bournville PCC in partnership with the St Francis Youth and Community Centre

Line Manager: The Revd Canon Peter Babington (The Vicarwho is also Chair of Centre Directors)

Hours: The post is part-time based on 16 hours per week and will involve work on several evenings. There is some flexibility in working hours especially out of term-time, including the possibility of banking hours. These hours include time for line-management and personal development.

Holiday: We offer 4 weeks’ holiday per year (pro rata). In addition, you are entitled to public holidays (possibly excepting Good Friday and Christmas Day depending on planned work, for which time off in lieu will be given).

Salary: £8,000(equivalent to £18,750 p.a. if full-time)

A detailed contract of employment will be available covering all aspects of the role.

Personal Profile

We are looking for someone who already hassome experience of working with young people (it is desirable to have had at least 12 months’ experience), and who already holds or is working towards (or willing to work towards) a relevantyouth work qualification.

They will be able to demonstrate the following organisational/professional skills:

•Good interpersonaland organisational skills.

•Good communication skills including social media.

•Ability to self-motivate and manage own workload.

•Able to lead, manage and support others (especially volunteers).

•Experience of working as part of a team, building and maintaining good relationships.

•Able to deal with the needs of different individuals, understanding when and how to seek additional support.

They will be able to demonstrate the following personal qualities:

•Passionate about and gifted in youth work.

•A committed Christian with a mature faith, positive about becoming a worshipping member of St Francis Bournville.

•A good working knowledge of Christian foundations and the Bible, with the ability to think theologically and engage young people increative teaching.

•Approachable by all ages especially young people and families.

•Ability to engage and inspire young people, easily building trust and gaining respect.

•Apositive,‘can do’ attitude.

The job description is not exhaustive and will be reviewed, in consultation with the post holder, fromtime to time and amended in the light of the changing needs of the church and centre. There will be monthly supervision and an annual appraisal.
