WHAT IS CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION?
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) gives spiritual care interns experience in learning the art and practice of spiritual care in a clinical setting. Each individual CPE unit consists of 400 hours of training which includes providing spiritual care to patients, family and staff. Theory and group sessions are facilitated by qualified CPE supervisors. Professional experts from a variety of health care disciplines also contribute to the training processes. CPE fosters interns’ learning goals to help them achieve their potential in providing spiritual care to others of many beliefs. By working directly with patients, family and staff members, interns build their skills in supporting people with physical, mental, and spiritual challenges.
CPE AT ST. JOSEPH’S
Over 25 years of experience in providing CPE has enabled us to continually refine and improve our experiential and classroom programs. We use adult-based teaching methods to build on the knowledge base our students bring to the programs. Theological, psychological, sociological and ethical themes are woven throughout every training unit. We create opportunities for interns to roll up their sleeves and get right to learning opportunities in the clinical settings. This is followed up with processes of reflection and analyses of caregiving experiences.
