The Food & Drink Business Growth Award is for the leading food and drink growth business in The Highland & Islands and Cairngorms National Park Authority area in 2017. The business owner will have a one to one interview with the judges, and be assessed on business performance, focus, innovation, strategic planning ability and leadership qualities.

Johnston Carmichael is Scotland’s largest independent firm of accountants and business advisers, with 600 partners and staff with a large full service office in Inverness. They are specialists in the food and drink sector with over 350 clients and a team with particular expertise in understanding clients’ issues in the sector and developing strategic plans for growth.

Qualifying Businesses/Who Should Apply

The Food & Drink Business Growth Award is open to any business/business owner of a food and drink

business whose head office (or the business,) is located in The Highlands & Islands and Cairngorms National

Park Authority area. Self nominations can be made across all categories of food and drink businesses, from

early stage to long established.

The Judging Criteria

The Highlands & Islands Food & Drink Business Growth Award 2017 judging criteria will take the form of a one to one meeting with the judges, at which the nominee will be asked to demonstrate how they have consistently delivered against the award criteria detailed below, providing examples as appropriate.

Performance / Consistent growth demonstrated by financial performance along with strong management of all aspects of the business.
Focus / A dynamic individual/business able to demonstrate resilience to “knocks” and operating to high industry and business standards.
Strategic Planning / Developed and delivering on a strategic plan for growth of the business
Innovation / Close to their given market, continuous innovation to drive the business forward either via new products, packaging or in-house procedures to enhance the efficiency of the business.
Leadership / The business/business owner demonstrates leadership which continuously allows the business and its people to develop.

Prizes Awarded

The Award winner will have further opportunity to meet with the Johnston Carmichael Food and Drink team to discuss Johnston Carmichael’s experience of working with other successful food and drink businesses, and the issues of relevance to these businesses such as planning for growth, tax efficient planning, plans for the business, exit strategies, tax breaks and allowances e.g. R&D tax credits, capital allowances, VAT matters such as international trading etc.

The judges will nominate up to 4 finalists to progress to a final interview at which supporting financial information may be requested. All financial information received will be treated in strict confidence and used solely for the purpose of determining the merit of the entry.

  • This completed entry form should be emailed to Jillian Sharp by Friday 5 May 2017.
  • All entries will be met with in a face to face interview by the Johnston Carmichael food and drink team at either at their business premises or Johnston Carmichael Inverness office.
  • Following the first round of interviews, a shortlist will be drawn up and a second round of interviews will take place in order to determine a winner.
  • The winner will be announced at the Highlands & Islands Food & Drink Awards Dinner & Ceremony at the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness on Friday 20th October 2017.
  • It is assumed that participants agree to product and company details being used for PR purposes and publicised in the awards brochure and on line.
