THE GLASS INDUSTRY IN TURKEY

COMPANY PROFILE AND EMPLOYEMENT

Manufacture of all the main products, such as sheet glass (including cut glass products), household goods made of glass, glass packaging, fiberglass, glass wool and stone wool takes place with economies of scale in modern plants equipped with the largest technology. Production in the sector is realized by a large number of firms of varying sizes.

The biggest firms in the sector are Türkiye Şişe ve Cam Fabrikaları A.Ş. Güral, Toprak, Koyunlu, Marmara Cam, Koncam, İzocam and İzoToprak. In addition, there are a large number of small and medium-scale firms active in the sector which produces cut glass of various kinds.

Türkiye Şişe ve Cam Fabrikları A.Ş (Şişecam) has factories producing sheet glass, varieties of cut glass, domestic glassware, glass packaging and fiberglass. Güral, Toprak, Net, Arda, Akcam and Koncam manufacture domestic glassware, Marmara Cam manufactures glass packaging, İzocam produces glass wool and stone wool. İzoToprak manufactures glass wool.

The Şişecam factories, which were established in 1935, entered the world markets in the 1960’s and achieved major growth in the 1980’s. Şişecam accounts for about 90% of total glass production in Turkey.

There are 26 companies in the Şişecam Group, and there has been an increase of 0,6% over the previous year in the number of employees, which is now 17,028. 30 per cent of this total are employed in the company’s factories abroad.

All production of sheet glass in Turkey is realized by Trakya Cam, which is a member of the Şişecam Group. Trakya Cam is the leader in the sheet glass market in Turkey, and carries out production and investments in a total of 14 factories in 5 different places (Lüleburgaz, Mersin, Çayırova, Yenişehir and Bulgaria).

PRODUCTION AND CAPACITY

Turkey’s glass sector accounts for 8% of world production. Production of glass achieved a 20% increase in 2008, being approximately 3,5 million tones. Thirty five per cent of the production took place abroad.

The production capacity of glass, bar processed glass, in Turkey is more than 2 million tons/year. 42 % of which is flat glass; 30 % is glass packaging; around 18-20 %, household goods, and the remaining 10 % is glass fiber, glass/rock wool. All of the factories in this sector belong to the private sector. Since many companies in the sector are yet to be institutionalized, the sector is dominated by one company, namely, Şişecam. Although the share of foreign capital within the sector is small, the sector is attracting global investors, such as Schott-Orim JV. Domestic consumption, production, export and import values of the sector have been on the rise in recent years. Major product groups are flat glass, industrial containers and glassware goods.

SHEET GLASS

The sheet glass sector serves the construction sector with a wide range of products. Approximately 55% of consumption of sheet glass is accounted for by the construction sector. Sheet glass is used for the windows of buildings first and foremost (single glazing, multi-layer insulating glass and coated glass) and also for cut glass and decorative glass for ornamental purposes, laminated glass, tempered glass, mirrors, frosted glass, glass bricks.

It is Trakya Cam that leads in sheet glass production in Turkey, and with a production capacity of 4% of the world total, ranks in the world top eight; the company accounts for 13,1% of the sheet glass production capacity in Europe, and is in Europe’s top five.

Trakya Cam has further reinforced its powerful position in the markets and has obtained favourable results. The most important development of the year for the company was the opening of two sheet glass factories in Yenişehir (Bursa) on after the other. Thus, and increase of 50% was achieved in Turkey’s production capacity.

GLASS PACKAGING

Total world production of glass exceeds 110 million tons, and 50 million tons is accounted for by glass packaging.

Anadolu Cam ranks among the world’s top 5 companies in production of glass packaging and has taken its leadership in the region to new levels. Production at the 3 facilities in Turkey amounts to 795,000 tons a year, to 1,075,000 tons a year at the 4 facilities in the Russian Federation and to 30,000 tons a year at the facilities in Georgia, reaching a production capacity of 1.9 million tons a year. Anadolu Cam, which provided employment for 4.700 persons at its facilities in Turkey and aborad, obtains 48% of its sales revenues from its operations abroad.

CHEMICALS

With the chemicals it manufactures at its 20 production facilities in 5 different countries, Türkiye Şişe ve Cam Fabrikaları A.Ş. provides inputs to a number of industries, particularly glass, textiles, foodstruffs and animal feed.

While production of chemicals used in the glass industry amounted to 1,3 million tones in 2007, with an increase of 4% it reached 1.4 million tons in 2008. Soda Sanayii A.Ş. one of the sector’s main producers, has become a leader exporter in its own field.

MULTI-LAYER INSULATION GLASS

Energy-saving considerations have made use of multi-layer insulation glass, generally known as double glazing, compulsory in Europe. In parallel with this implementation, manufacture of high-performance multi-layer insulation glass and coated glass is taking place in Turkey.

FIBREGLASS

Consumption of fiberglass, which is used as a reinforcing agent in the manufacture of composite material increased in 2008. Growth in its se in the pipe, automotive, construction-infrastructure, electrical-electronic and ship-building sectors accounts much of this increase.

GLASS WOOL

Glass wool, which is one of the mineral wools, is used as an insulation material.

GLASS MOSAIC

The glass mosaic industry has attracted attention all over the world in recent years and it has begun to occupy an important place in Turkey’s glass industry as well. Production of glass mosaic is done by glass and ceramic manufacturers.

SAFETY GLASS

Safety glass is produced by increasing its resistance to mechanical force and heat. Thus, when it breaks, it shatters into pieces the size of a dice, reducing the risk of injury. No changes take place in the colour of the glass as a result of the thermal processes applied.

OTHER GLASS PRODUCTS AND RAW MATERIALS

The basic raw materials used in manufacture of glass are quartz, dolomite and soda. Each of these raw materials is obtained in Turkey. Turkey satisfies about 2% of the world’s soda requirements and 10% of the needs of the European Union. About 20% of production costs are accounted for by soda.

DOMESTIC DEMAND AND CONSUMPTION

The glass industry is obliged to function at full capacity because of production conditions. This situation leads to production in excess of demand. More than half of the demand for glass from the construction sector is accounted for by the renewals market.

According to EU criteria at least 60% of glass must be recycled. This ratio is still around the 30% level in Turkey. However high costs of recycling may be, profit margins will not be affected much in the long run. Consumption of sheet glass is constantly increasing.

According to date obtained from Şişe ve Cam Fabrikaları A.Ş., net sales registered an increase of 16,2% in 2008, reaching 2,9 billion dollars. International sales deriving from exports and sales of products from the factories abroad achieved 1,4 billion dollars.

Per capita annual consumption of glass in Western Europe is 21 kg, while it only half that amount in Turkey. However, a potential for development exists.
