SEC. 204 LOCAL WELLNESS POLICY

Establishes a plan for measuring implementation of the local wellness policy, including designation of 1 or more persons within the local educational agency or at each school, as appropriate, charged with operational responsibility for ensuring that the school meets the

local wellness policy. Total each column, multiply total “Exceptional” by 3, total “Acceptable” by 2, and total “Needs Improvement” by 1. Tally scores to get grand total.

Component 1: Nutrition Education Goals: Schools will promote nutrition education to all students.
LaPorte ISD will follow health education curriculum standards and guidelines as stated by the Texas Education Agency.

1. Nutrition education is part of not only health education classes, but also classroom instruction in subjects such as math, science, language arts, social studies and electives. / 6 (Elem.) / 3 (Jr. Highs) / (This does not pertain to the high school and DeWalt).
All elementary schools are on target with this. Suggest Jr. High PE teachers give copies of Healthy & Wise newsletters to teachers for use in classroom.
2. The school cafeteria will display posters to promote healthy eating and display other nutrition education materials. / 11 / Bulletin Boards were purchased for all campuses except high school and Bayshore. Bayshore’s has since been ordered. All were hung except one elementary school.
3. Nutrition education includes training for teachers and staff. / 11 / No new Healthy & Wise trainings were offered this school year. Suggest hosting one before next school year.
Nutrition Policy was discussed with all principals at principal meetings.
Component 2: Physical Activity Goals: The schools will adopt and implement state standards for physical activity.
Schools will provide opportunities for students to regularly participate in physical activity.

1. K-5Grade Schools will provide 135 minutes of PE per week and 20 minutes of recess per day. 6, 7, & 8 Grade Schools will provide 135 minutes of PE per week or 225 minutes of PE per 2 weeks if using block scheduling for 4 semesters during these grade levels. / 9 / (This does not pertain to the high school and DeWalt).
2. Elementary and Middle schools will implement physical activities from the Healthy and Wise/Spark PE curriculum. / 9
3. Students are given opportunities for physical activity during the school day through physical education classes, daily recess periods for elementary school students, and the integration of physical activity into the academic curriculum. / 6 / 5 / Many schools are also offering some type of exercise club.
4. Schools provide training to enable teachers, and other school staff to promote enjoyable, lifelong physical activity among students. / 11 / Many PE teachers planned on attending TAPHERD.
A district sponsored training would help also.
Component 3: Nutrition Standards Goals: Schools will comply with the current USDA dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Texas
Public Schools Nutrition Policy.

1. The district shall ensure that nutritional guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall be at least as restrictive as federal regulations and guidance and that all foods available on each campus are in accordance with the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. / 11 / All foods provided through the school nutrition department meet federal regulations and the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy.
Nutrition Policy was discussed with all principals at principal meetings.

Component 4: Other School Based Activities: The school district encourages parents, teachers, school administrators, students, food service professional and the community to serve as role models in practicing healthy eating and being physically active, both in school and at home.

1.The district will encourage healthy eating and physical activity by distributing bi-monthly newsletters with health related information from the School Nutrition Department. / 11 / Nutrition Nuggets are distributed to elementary students monthly.
