Background Information

Affected Regions:

Situation Update:

As of 30 April, killing over 5,000, injuring at least11,000, and over 500,000 families are homeless. Many people are still missing and waiting for search and rescue. The number of casualties is expected to rise.

The major hospitals in Kathmandu are only providing limited services. As hospitals overflowing with injured, some of the injured are treated outdoor.

According to the report from the United Nations, 8 million people have been affected, of which 2 million are from 11 worsthit regions.

The Nepal government has set up 16 temporary camps in Kathmandu to shelter displaced people.

Needs in the affected regions:

Emergency relief items like food, clean water, emergency medical service and shelter. It is estimated that over 1.4 million of people are in urgent needs of food.

Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) Actions

Launched emergency appeal on 27 April 2015 to call for public support on HKRC’s relief operations

Mobilized HKD500,000 to support International Red Cross for immediate relief

Emergency tracing service is offered to people who live in Hong Kong looking for their missing family members in Nepal due to this disaster

One veteran relief officer is on ground to conduct field assessment with Nepal Red Cross Society. Another staff member is working in the Asia Pacific zone office of the International Red Cross based in Kuala Lumpur to coordinate the overall relief support operation.

Deploys five volunteers with medical qualifications to the affected areas of Nepal in three batches from 29 April to 1 May. The volunteers will join three medical relief teams of the International Red Cross respectively, to participate in humanitarian relief work for about a month.

HKRC is now accepting public donations for “Nepal Earthquake” in supporting the disaster relief, reconstruction, recovery and disaster preparedness programs in the affected regions. As of 3p.m., 30 April 2015, HK$9,270,318was received.

Youth & Volunteer Department will run street fundraising stations in different districts including Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong.

International Red Cross Actions

International Red Cross has immediately mobilized approximately HKD 4 million to support the emergency operation, and is appealing about HKD 270 million, to assist the affected people with relief items, medical services, safe drinking water, temporary shelters, dead body management and post disaster reconstruction programs.

International Red Cross has activated global emergency response mechanism, and immediately mobilized 11 relief experts to the field to conduct needs assessment and coordinate the relief operation. Sevenemergency response teams are being deployed to the affected areas.

Immediately after the shock, Nepal Red Cross Society has mobilized about 2,200 volunteers and 300 staff members for rapid needs assessment and providing immediate relief to those affected, including:

Search and rescue in the rubbles, first aid services to the injured

The blood bank of Red Cross provides blood supplies to the main medical facilities in Kathmandu

Setting up tents to shelter affected population and provided life necessities, including 5,775 tarpaulins, 3,500 blankets and 19,000 necessities packages

Emergency tracing services to assist families who lost contact because of the quakes

Provide 900 body bags to local hospitals for proper handling of the remains.
