Course Prerequisite:

Algebra I

Materials:

3 Ring Binder, filler paper

Dividers (to separate the units; 12 units in all)

Mechanical Pencil, Click Eraser (NO INK ALLOWED!!!!)

Scientific Calculator is all you will need for Geometry. If you have already purchased a TI-83, TI-83 Plus,TI-84 or any TI-Nspire graphing calculator, it will be fine to use as well.

Course Description:

In Geometry the students will develop a fluency in understanding the properties of basic geometric figures and the relationships between and among them. They will study special segments of triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons. The students will also develop the mathematical processes and understanding of transformations, coordinate geometry, right triangle trigonometry and vectors. They will gain knowledge of the properties of circles, the lines that intersect them, and the use of their special segments. The students will also study surface area and volume of three-dimensional objects. Throughout all the objectives learned in Geometry the students will understand and utilize the mathematical processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation.

At the conclusion of this course, students will take a FINAL EXAMgiven by Georgetown County School District. This exam is weighted as 20% of the students overall grade for the year.

Quarterly Grading:

Major Assessments: 50% (Tests and Major Projects)

Quizzes: 30% (Minor Projects)

Daily Practice:20% (Homework, notebook checks, in class assignments, non- fiction writing, warm-ups and class participation.)

Grading Scale:

A: 93- 100

B: 85 – 92

C: 77 – 84

D: 70 – 76

F: 69 and below

The FINAL GRADE for the course will be calculated by averaging the four quarterly grades and the FINAL EXAM grade; each of these five components will therefore comprise 20% of the course grade.

Second Chance Policy:

If a student earns a grade below 90% on any major assessment only, the student will be allowed to either make corrections or re-test (determined by the instructor) to earn back a maximum of 50% of the points lost. The highest grade that may be attained upon the successful completion of corrections is 89%. The instructor will establish a cut-off date by which the student must complete the corrections.

Pacing:

Please go to my website for the pacing guide.

Behavior Management:

Expectations:

1. Be on time and prepared for class (you should be working on opening activity at bell).

2. Participate in class and COMPLETE all work.

3. Respect others’ ideas, feelings and property.

4. NO food or drink allowed in the classroom at any time.

5. NO cell phones, iPods or any technological device (calculators are an exception).

6. Follow ALL school and district policies as noted in your school handbook.

Consequences:

1st Offense: Verbal warning

2nd Offense: Teacher-student conference

3rd Offense: Lunch detention *

*Persistent behavior will result in areferral to administration

Consequences for technological devices seen, heard or used:

1st Offense: Confiscated by teacher and returned at the end of class

2nd Offense:Confiscated by teacher and given to administration

3rd Offense:Confiscated by teacher and given to administration

4th Offense:Confiscated by teacher and given to administration

Dishonesty is unacceptable. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for the assessment and will be referred to administration. The student giving the answers will be dealt with in the same manner.

Absence Policy (concerning missed work):

Note: It is important that all students and parents are aware of the district wide attendance policy. Credit can be withheld if a student accrues too many unexcused absences as defined by the state of South Carolina.

If a student is absent from class, the following policy will apply.

In general, a student has three days to make up any missed work from the day they were absent.

Exceptions to the policy above:

  1. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due or assessment is given, they are expected to turn in the assignment or take the assessment upon their return to school.
  2. Students that miss multiple days, due to illness or other unforeseen reasons should see me upon their return to discuss a reasonable time-table to make-up their work. The student will receive a “1” in the grade book until the work is made up.
  3. A weekly lesson plan will be posted at the beginning of each week. Please refer to the lesson plan and my website when you are absent from school for missed assignments.

Success in Math:

Here are a few suggestions on how to be successful in math:

1. Listen and take good notes.

2. Ask questions.

3. Care about your homework. Don’t just do it … UNDERSTAND IT! If you didn’t get the correct answers the first time, do them again until you have achieved mastery.

4. Pay close attention to the details.

5. Do your absoluteBEST!
