Job Description

Title:Graphic Designer

Reports to:Vice President, Marketing

Summary:

This position is an in-house graphic designer that supports all departments of Experience Columbus and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. The designer is responsible for creating visual and online marketing and advertising material and managing production with outside vendors.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Design and produce collateral and sales, business development and marketing tools for both organizations
  • Responsible for concepting ideas with very little direction, providing design solutions and executing layouts
  • Working in conjunction with the VP, Marketing, coordinate with advertising agency to implement campaigns
  • Apply critical thinking in the development of design concepts, demonstrate creative problem solving in the production of art files
  • Adhere to campaign standards and accurately reflect the brand standards of Experience Columbus and the Sports Commission
  • Design sales and marketing collateral (e.g. bid book, direct mail, presentations, sell sheets, invitations, annual reports, client gifts, etc.) and update materials to ensure accuracy
  • Has full ownership of production managementthrough final delivery of marketing materials with outside vendors, printers, publishers, etc.
  • Design e-mails and digital banners
  • Produce mock-ups when requested; may be required to make edits or significant changes to layouts previously designed
  • Obtain all necessary final approvals on proofs before releasing files into final production with outside vendors
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending design workshops, reviewing professional publications, participating in professional societies, etc.
  1. Create and submit advertising
  • Design new concepts for paid placements, print and digital
  • Submit ads to outside publications
  • Re-size current ads and submit to outside publications
  • Refreshexisting concepts, as needed
  1. Manage the image library
  • Constantly update the library by purging old images and aggressively seeking new images
  • Coordinate and manage photo shoots
  • Share new images with marketing partners (i.e. agency and publisher)
  • Manage budget to purchase new images
  • Track usage rights and, as necessary, negotiate new rights
  • Update photos on brandcolumbus.com
  • Fulfill requests for photos, as needed
  • Distribute Experience Columbus and Greater Columbus Sports Commission logos and review usage, as needed

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Adheres to budget and time constraints
  2. Collaborates with members of the marketing department and other team members across the organization
  3. Fully utilizes the production management software (RedBooth) in managing projects, workload and priorities
  4. Constantly presents new ideas to team members
  5. Takes ownership of creative projects during the entire production phase
  6. Assist with special projects, as assigned
  7. Miscellaneous editing and proofing
  8. Attend Experience Columbus and member functions when able and necessary

Education and Experience:

  • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university in graphic design, or a degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related fieldwith technical training in graphic design
  • Must demonstrate creativity and originality in design and marketing experience through a professional portfolio
  • The organization requires all employees to obtain and maintain their Certified Tourism Ambassador™ (CTA) designation

Competencies and Skills:

  • Must be able to listen attentively, think of new approaches to communicating ideas, develop unique designs that convey a recognizable meaning, present ideas to staff and team members, and make changes as requested
  • Have proven experience in concepting and designing materials
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail
  • Possess in depth knowledge of the entire Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, and Photoshop as well as proficient in Microsoft Office products and have experience with online applications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the printing process, photography, illustration and typography; expertise with prepress file preparation
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time, each with a different deadline
  • Demonstrates flexibility, resilience, and a willingness to learn
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Resourceful; creative problem solver; detail-oriented; highly organized
  • Understands how to work with outside vendors, printers, and photographers
  • Capable of planning and executing photo and video shoots
