ESTHER CATHERINE RELIHAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

NAME:

The Esther Catherine Relihan Memorial Trust

PURPOSE:

Earnings from the Trust shall be set aside as a Scholarship Fund annually to assist a worthy

recipient who is a graduate of the Smith Center High School, Smith Center, Kansas.

AMOUNT:

Amount of the scholarship is $1000. ($250 per semester for four semesters)

(1) Scholarship is not renewable.

(2) Scholarship will be paid to the recipient at Trustees discretion.

(3) Distribution shall not be made in a single lump sum, but shall be paid over the school term in such manner as will best serve the recipient.

(4) Should the applicant discontinue his or her college education, other than for illness, then in such event benefactors may at their discretion make no further payments of the award to said recipient.

ELIGIBILITY:

(1) Applicant may be either a male or female graduating member of the Smith Center High School,

Smith Center, Kansas.

(2) Applicant must be among the upper one-third of the graduating class scholastically.

(3) Applicant, most importantly, shall be one who will need financial assistance in order to secure a college education.

(4) Applicant must attend a 4-year college or may attend a 2-year college with plans to continue his or her college education at a 4-year college.

HOW TO APPLY:

(1) Application must be submitted to the counselor by April 1.

(2) A written essay, of no more than one page, on “Why I want to continue my education,” must

accompany the application form.

(3) A supplemental statement indicating financial need must accompany the application. Statement must be supported with parents' current year income tax form 1040, with supporting income and expense schedules for self-employed individuals. INCOME TAX INFORMATION WILL BE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION USED ONL Y FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS FAILURE TO SUBMIT INCOME TAX INFORMATION WILLDISQUALIFY APPLICATION.

(4) A list of all school and community activities participated in and honors earned during the first four years of high school must accompany the application form.

(5) A complete transcript of grades must accompany the application form.

SELECTION OF COMITTEE: Relihan

The committee of five consists of the Smith Center High School Principal, student counselor and

two tenured members of the teaching staff appointed by the Principal, the fifth member shall be a

representative of the First National Bank of Smith Center, Kansas.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

(1) The need of financial assistance in order to secure a college education.

(2) Scholastic ability.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RECIPIENT:

The winner will be announced at High School Commencement.

(a) be a graduating male or female senior at Smith Center High School.

(b) be in the top one-third of the graduating class scholastically.

(c) be in need of financial help in furthering his or her COLLEGE education.

(d) must attend a 4-year college, or may attend a 2-year college with plans to continue his or her

education at a 4-year college.
