Julia M Boness – Curriculum Vitae

Julia is the one with the smaller backpack.

Key Features

I qualified from Cambridge University as a veterinary surgeon in 1985 and have successfully progressed in my career to owning, managing and actively working in my own veterinary hospital which offers the highest quality of modern treatments and service. Hence, I can say that I am an educated, experienced and highly motivated individual with a strong sense of social responsibility and awareness of wider commercial, cultural and environmental issues.

Academically, I have achieved high standards and can assimilate and assess information and situations quickly and accurately, all essential characteristics of a good veterinarian.

I have experience in a variety of roles, professional, political and social. Telephone interviews and ‘Ask the Expert’ slots on BBC Three Counties Radio and the Paul O’Grady television show appearance have allowed me to communicate veterinary views, knowledge, humour and emotion to a wide and appreciative audience. As a professional veterinary surgeon I undertake a wide variety of activities both surgical and medical and I am constantly looking for leading edge solutions to all manner of animal ailments and conditions.

Over the last 26 years I have managed the development of my business, Boness Veterinary Hospital, where I lead a team of 35 (including 8 veterinarians). Never one to ignore alternative opinions, I encourage constant communication and feedback across all aspects of my business and social life.

Current Role

My job title is Clinical Director while my husband is Business Director. I consult in all areas of the business and do surgical procedures. I do most of the orthopaedic procedures in the Hospital, and am confident in laparoscopic procedures, ( currently two thirds of our canine ovariectomies are done laparoscopically). I also perform acupuncture on small animal patients and oversee rehabilitation programmes for small animals in our physiotherapy and hydrotherapy suite which is part of the Hospital.

I share responsibility for human resource management and marketing with my husband

I was on the GP interview panel for candidates for the Royal Veterinary College and regularly take and manage students doing EMS at my Hospital. I mentor our new graduates and am actively involved in training veterinary nurses to Registered Level and beyond.

I am responsible for making sure we meet the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards and coordinating clinical auditing activities, which includes a forum where all the vets can discuss cases and management securely. I am continually working on enhancements for our information management system for medical recording and client information for my Hospital.

I attend Continuing Professional Development courses in excess of RCVS guidelines, and have travelled to the USA and Europe in some instances to source learning. In 2011 I completed the CCRP course which required me to visit both the Universities of Vienna and Tennessee. l regularly attend the British Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress and British Veterinary Association Congress.

I am confident giving presentations to fellow professionals and have taught hydrotherapy courses. I have also given presentations to clients in a variety of formats and to the Burmese Cat Club.

I am currently studying for a Post-Graduate certificate in small animal surgery with BSAVA, which is at Level 7 Masters.

5  Career History

1990 to Date:
Clinical Director at Boness Veterinary Enterprises Ltd.

·  2016 – Currently employing 38 staff on 2 sites with more than 5,000 active clients. Continue to work in support of the industry via activities on various bodies and communicate widely with other industry professionals. Continuous training and business development are an important aspect of my activities.

·  2010 – We opened a branch clinic in Flitwick, a local village, with facilities for consultations and small operations. More major work is referred to our Hospital premises.

·  2008 – We equipped a small animal physiotherapy suite and I am currently in charge of Canine and Feline Rehabilitation programmes for my practice and other practices that refer cases to us. A variety of modalities are in regular use.

·  I have instructed and lectured here and in Europe on the application of hydrotherapy to rehabilitate dogs.

·  2007 – We opened a Cat Clinic which offered a unique facility in the locality just for cats comprising 2 consulting rooms and a small operating theatre.

·  2004 - The caseload with Beds Vets led to improvements in the level of patient and client care that we can offer, as well as the need for sophisticated diagnostic and monitoring equipment. My husband joined me in the business. This continued to be an exciting and expanding area of business until the start of the recession.

·  2003 - Extended the professional and business interests of my Veterinary Hospital by setting up Beds Vets Emergency Service and organised the 2 business together under the umbrella of Boness Veterinary Enterprises Ltd. Beds Vets provides out of hours emergency and critical care services to other veterinary practices as well as our own clients in the local area.

·  1994 to 2003 – This period saw significant growth in numbers of clients and staff and revenue.

·  1991 to 1994 - Having founded the practice as a single handed veterinarian, demand for veterinary services quickly grew both as a result of the uniqueness of the service I provided and an increase in the local population. I took on my first veterinary assistant early in 1994, by which time I already had a qualified veterinary nurse on board and registered to become an approved training practice taking on my first trainee nurse at in 1993. Work also began on our new purpose built premises in 1994, which was officially opened as a Veterinary Hospital in 1995.

·  1990 – Opened Julia M Boness Veterinary Clinic in Barton-Le-Clay with one assistant nurse.

September 1987 to March 1990:
Senior Veterinary Assistant and Practice Manager, Icknield Veterinary Group, Luton, Beds.

·  My areas of responsibility included managing the clinical and administrative staff, dealing with queries and complaints from clients, and liaising with the Partners located at a distant site. During my period here the Practice was modernised both in terms of facilities and working practices; much of my time was spent training staff in new techniques and work psychology.

·  During this time I attended my first management conferences and began to formulate ideas for my own practice of the future. My skills in management were clearly developing, as were my clinical experience and ambition. When I was offered partnership I decided this was the time to move out on my own.

March 1987 to September 1987:
Veterinary Assistant Potter and Associates, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.

·  I was employed here as the only small animal only veterinary surgeon in a mixed small and large animal (companion and livestock animals) practice. My role was to have developed into that of managing the small animal side of the practice for the principal. The practice was going through a difficult time and my employment did not progress in the way that I wanted. I then decided to take on a new role back in Luton, with the prospect of better salary and partnership possibilities. Shortly after I left Leighton Buzzard Colin Potter, the principal, tragically committed suicide.

September 1985 to March 1987:
Junior Veterinary Assistant at Molly Fardell’ Veterinary Surgery, Luton, Beds.

·  I started my professional career in this busy town practice. It was a great training ground, and although some of the techniques were very out of date I learned my basic diagnostic, medical and surgical skills from my seniors and my nurses, one of whom still works with me today as my head nurse. It was here I started to learn the art of being a veterinary general practitioner.
