English 11 Enriched Summer Reading Assignment 2015

Fiction:The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Non-Fiction:The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

This is your first assignment for English 11 Enriched. You are to complete this assignment by the first day of class (August 18th for first semester, January 4th for second semester). You will receive a grade deduction for turning in your assignment late. The first two weeks of class will be spent working with and analyzing the content of these two texts, so come prepared to participate and demonstrate your understanding.

Each text requires a different assignment, so read both sets of instructions thoroughly. Any writing responses for both assignments should be shared in a Google Doc. Title the document LastName.SummerReading.BookTitle. Do not forget to share to or you will receive a late grade.

Alternative Texts: You may choose to read the alternative texts if you deem the two texts above inappropriate or unsuitable. The same assignments apply to these two texts.

Assignment #1: The World Without Us—Critical Reading Journals (32 Points)

As you read The World Without Us, you are going to keep a running critical reading journal on Google Docs. These journal entries will demonstrate your understanding of the text, so be clear and thorough with your answers. Complete a total of eight (8) critical reading journals as you read the text. Include all of the components listed below.

  • Chapter Summary
  • What are the key points of this chapter?
  • What new information was presented?
  • Your summary should be 5-7 sentences in length.
  • Key Passage Explained
  • Choose a key passage from the chapter and write it down. You may take a picture of the passage and use that as evidence.
  • Write a 3-5 sentence paragraph explaining the importance/significance of the passage, relating it to the overall theme of the text.
  • Reflection
  • Compose a 3-5 sentence personal reflection on the chapter that you select.
  • Did you learn something new from this chapter? Did your opinion change on anything? How does the information in this chapter relate to your life?

Assignment #2: The Catcher in the Rye—Project Based Assessment (40 Points)

After reading The Catcher in the Rye, you will choose one of the options below to create something to demonstrate your understanding of the novel. Choose only one option, but complete it with a thorough and thoughtful insight to the text. Each option will be graded against the same rubric. Be sure to complete every component of the assignment and have it with you on the first day of class. Failure to do so will result in a late grade.

Option #1: Create a Comic Book

Create a comic book using the plot of the book you just read. Your comic book should cover the ten most important events in the text. The comic should include at least fifteen (15) different frames. Your comic book should be illustrated in color. You can either create this comic book by hand, printing out comic templates online; or, you can use an online comic book creator and send me the link to view it. Remember that if you choose to do a digital comic book, I need to have public access to view it and grade it.

Option #2: Design a Newspaper

Create and write a newspaper, including multiple pages, detailing the various subjects explored in the text. You must include five (5)newspaper pages (articles) that directly relate to the text. Remember, there is no “white space” in a newspaper. The layout of your newspaper should cover every available space. Cartoons, classifieds, advertisements, pictures, and editorials are examples of what you can add to your newspaper to make it more interesting and creative. Remember that every part of the newspaper needs to relate to the events in your book. You can use a digital newspaper creator like Microsoft Word. There are tons of premade templates on Word and Google Docs.

Option #3: Journey Map

Create a map of Holden’s journey throughout the novel. Provide visuals of places visited and write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) about how each place affects him. You will want to consider why he went there, what happened while he was there, and how his visit affects him. You must include eight (8) different locations. This can take the form of a drawn out map on a tri-fold, a digital map, a prezi, a powerpoint, a poster, etc.
