III. GRADES/GRADING SYSTEM:

Unit60%Daily 40%A90-100

ExamsClass AssignmentsB80-89

C70-79

D60-69

F0-59

Each nine-week grading period counts 40% and the semester exam counts 20% of the semester average. The first semester and the second semester averages will be averaged to arrive at a final average for the course.

Example:

40% - 1st nine weeks average

40% - 2nd nine weeks average

20% - semester exam grade

1st semester average + 2nd semester average ÷ 2 = final average for course.

NOTE: Partial credit cannot be awarded for courses designated to earn one credit.

  • The exemption policy applies only to those classes that are not taking state mandated End of Course Exams. All students must take End of Course Exams, regardless of their grades or attendance.
  • Students in grades nine (9) through twelve (12) may exempt semester and end-of-course examinations if they meet the following criteria:
  • An “A” average with no more than 2 absences
  • A “B” average with no more than 1 absence
  • A “C” average with no absences
  • Any student who has skipped either a class period or a school day, been suspended, or been assigned to the Elmore County Alternative Program (ECAP) will forfeit the opportunity to exempt any final examination regardless of grade average. Three unexcused tardies to class will forfeit exemption status in that class.

Please note: School authorized field trips, a college day (with proper documentation), and military absences (with proper documentation) do not count as absences towards exemptions.

IV. RULES:

1. Arrive to class on time and prepared for class.

2. No talking or cheating or any behavior that appears to be talking or cheating during

individual graded assignments. Be courteous to those still working.

3. No gum, food, candy or drinks in the classroom. Keep your area clean.

4. When you are absent contact a classmate about assignments so you will be prepared

when you return to class. Get at least five classmates’ contact information.

5. Upon the student’s return, absences must be excused and make up work must be

scheduled with three school days.

V. MAKE-UP WORK

  • Students have three days to provide an excused absence.
  • No make-up work can be given for unexcused absences.
  • In the case of excused absences, the teacher and student should agree on a time for the work to be made up and teachers should document due date.
  • Students may be requested to sign acknowledgment of the agreed upon time.
  • If the student fails to make-up work at the designated time and has no valid reason for not doing so, he/she will be given a zero.
  • Teachers may construct make-up tests in a different format from the original assignment.
  • Students who are suspended will not be given the opportunity to make up all academic work missed during the suspension EXCEPT for the first suspension during a school year (see Elmore County Handbook and Code of Conduct).

VI. ACADEMIC HONESTY

Cheating

It is expected that all academic work completed by any student in the Elmore County School System will be his/her own work. Elmore County Schools will not tolerate cheating in any form. Students will not engage in any act of deception or falsification of work product. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Cheating by receiving unauthorized aid or assistance

  • Possessing materials that invalidate any academic course work either during or prior to the work being assigned (test or course work).

Any student completing any academic work dishonestly will receive a zero for that assignment with no opportunity to make it up. Students that provide information will be disciplined in accordance with Class 1 Offense AK (See Student Code of Conduct). The teacher will also contact the parents/guardians of the student and inform them of the student’s actions.

Plagiarism

When making research assignments, teachers in all subject areas must inform and instruct students regarding plagiarism and the seriousness of the offense. A variety of resources are available for teacher and student use to aid in preventing plagiarism such as:

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to “plagiarize” means:

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own
  • to use (another’s production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source

All of the following are considered plagiarism:

  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not.
  • Parent/guardian is notified of plagiarism and the student’s opportunity to rewrite the assignment.
  • Student has one week to submit the rewritten assignment which must have the parent’s/guardian’s signature.
  • Highest possible grade on the rewritten assignment is an70/C; if the rewritten assignment is plagiarized, it will receive a grade of zero.

Second and subsequent offenses:

Plagiarized assignments will receive a grade of zero without the opportunity to rewrite the assignment.

Grades 11-12 Consequences

Any plagiarized assignment will receive a grade of zero.

VII. VISITORS

Parents are welcome at any time, and they are encouraged to visit classes and to attend school-sponsored activities.

  • For the safety of all, visitors including parents must obtain a visitor’s badge and sign-in in the school’s office.
  • Visitors are to wear the visitor’s badge at all times. The badge must be visible.
  • Permission cannot be granted for students to invite school age or younger friends or relatives to spend the day at school.
