Course Description and Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to help you attain the skills/concepts necessary to start and operate your own business. You will do this by becoming aware of the traits and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. In addition, you will develop and understanding of the research, planning and regulations affecting small businesses. Finally, you will put this knowledge to use by running your own business.DECA/FBLA involvement is a crucial aspect of the BMAC program and will involve students in: the community service, career exploration, socialization, competition, and leadership activities. Membership for either of these organizations is $17 a year.

Textbook and Material Requirements:

The WSU Concurrent Enrollment materials and USOE curriculum will be used for this course.The REQUIRED textbook for this course is “The Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur. ISBN: 9780470876411.” This textbook will be utilized along with enhancement materials approved by the USOE. Relevant videos will be shown in class that pertains to the various elements of entrepreneurship. Some of these videosinclude: Shark Tank, The Profit, Tucker,The Men Who Built America, and other appropriate videos from television, news, and documentaries. If you have questions regarding these videos, please let me know. Students will need to bring a dedicated notebook/folder and writing utensil to class everyday!

There is a $5 class fee for this class.

Concurrent Enrollment:

Only serious minded students should take this course. This is a COLLEGE LEVEL COURSEfor which some students will earn WSU credits that are transferable to other public higher education institutions. Those students that desire college credit must be sponsored by the instructor, must maintain no lower than a B grade, and90% attendance (only 3 absences per term). Admissions/Registration info will be discussed in class and is available on the instructor’s website.(WSU Course ENTR 1002-CRN25430)

Professional Development:

This category allows the students to earn points through joining and participating in DECA activities and/or other “outside of class” activities. In addition to common material covered in class the student must complete a certain amount of individual work from the professional development file. These assignments will not be accepted if turned in late.

Evaluation and Grading Criteria:

Grading will be based on the scores earned on assignments given in each of the following categories: assignments/activities, quizzes/tests, professional development, and projects. Other categories may be added. All categories (other than term projects) are weighted equally, but more points may be available in one category or another. Attendance is very important in this class as some activities done in class cannot be made up. There will be one term project each quarter; failure to turn in a term project will drop the student a full letter grade regardless of points/percentages. Letter grades will be awarded according to the distribution below:

A94-100%C74-76%

A-89-93%C-70-73%

B+86-88%D+67-69%

B83-85%D63-66%

B-80-82%D-60-62%

C+77-79%F59% and below

Assignments and Learning Activities:

Attendance is very necessary to accomplish the goals of the CE Entrepreneurship course. Assignments are given at random determined by the subject and the teacher during the course. All assignments will be relevant to Marketing careers. There will be one term project each quarter; failure to turn in a term project will drop the student a full letter grade regardless of points/percentages. A general course outline/syllabus will be distributed shortly.

Citizenship (Absence and Tardy) Policy:

This class will follow the behavior, attendance and tardy policies as outlined in the student handbook. In this class 4 tardies will result in an N and on the 5th tardy a U will be issued. All absences must be cleared through the office within two days of missing class. Two unexcused absence will result in an N, three or more will result in a U. I am expected to make arrangements and clear my absences with the office and I expect the same from my students. No make-up work will be given for an unexcused absence.

Late and Make-Up Work:

Students will be required to complete any work missed for an excused absence within one week of their return to school. If a student misses a scheduled test or quiz without prior notification, the test or quiz will be worth only 90% of the original point value. Late work or work submitted after the assigned due date will be docked 10% for each school day past the due date up to 50%. No work will be accepted one week after the due date. Late work will not be accepted the last week of any term. Term projects and some other assignments will not be accepted late. Students will be notified as to which assignments will not be accepted late. The instructor reserves the right to withhold make-up work from truant students. Making up assignments is the responsibility of the student! Ultimately I am here to help students learn, if there are extenuating circumstances please let me know.
