Antigone Chorus Assignment

By far, the Chorus represents one of the most difficult aspects of reading Antigone. My goal for this assignment is for you to practice close reading and analytical skills by focusing on individual Choral odes.

Assignment #1: For Lines 1-416

1.  Read Robert Fagles’ notes in the text box above (“Chorus as Emotional Bridge” and “Function of Choral Odes”).

2.  Reread the first Choral ode, known as the “Ode to Man,” in lines 376-424.

3.  Paraphrase the Choral ode to clarify what it means. You do not have to paraphrase every word. Instead, I want you to adhere to the stanza breaks and think about the argument each stanza is making. This should be typed and double-spaced.

4.  Answer this question: Why might this ode be sung at this point in the play?

Assignment #2: For Lines 427-700

1.  Read Robert Fagles’ notes in the text box above (“Chorus as Emotional Bridge” and “Function of Choral Odes”).

2.  Reread the second Choral ode in lines 656-700.

3.  Paraphrase the Choral ode to clarify what it means. You do not have to paraphrase every word. Instead, I want you to adhere to the stanza breaks and think about the argument each stanza is making. This should be typed and double-spaced.

4.  Answer this question: Explain how the “man on earth” (678) could be Antigone or Creon. Quote additional text from this ode to support your response.
