Daniel Stefanita*(PowerPoint)
College Attended: Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, Romania
Degree Earned: Bachelors degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering
Current Occupation: Senior Principal Engineer, New Product Development at Intelsat
Employer: Intelsat
Career Preparation: As a student in college, Mr. Stefanita took an internship for 2 years with a telecommunication company in Romania. For his last 2 years, he worked on a research and design project with one of his professors on a project about Digital processing of infrared images.
Engineer Studies: Mr. Stefanita had a passion for Engineering ever since he was a kid. He would work on radio transistors in high school. And liked to stay after school to participate in chemistry and electrical projects. His degree in Electrical and telecommunications Engineering is a direct correlation with shi job because at Intelsat, Mr. Stefanita and his team of engineers work on satellites and this job requires an electrical engineering degree.
Job Profile (In order of first to last):
TV broadcasting station-maintaining and operating TV and FM transmitters and microwave communications links that were supplying the video and audio signals to the transmitters
Earth Station Manager- Maintaining telecommunications
Intelsat-Senior Principal Engineer, New Product Development. Maintained Satellite programming and communications
Life at work: Many times Mr. Stefanita can be found in meetings in which he and his team discuss projects. Otherwise he spends his time developing solutions for Intelsat’s Managed Services, which combine satellite and terrestrial networking technologies to deliver an end-to-end service (like video, voice and data), development and evaluation of service requirements; evaluation of technologies; development of alternative architectures; design of new service features and the consideration of practical factors such as operational issues.
Life outside of work: After working about 40 hours a week, Mr. Stefanita likes to spend quiet time with his family, reading, and going out to watch movies. His favorite film this year is Wanted.

John Gross
Career Preparation: Dr. Gross attended CornellUniversity and received the Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering (Civil) degrees in 1969 and 1970, respectively. In 1975, Dr. Gross returned to CornellUniversity as a doctoral candidate. He received the Ph.D. Degree in Structural Engineering with a minor in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in May 1980. His research involved the development of an analytical method for evaluating a building's resistance to progressive collapse.
Engineer Studies: Dr. Gross had a serious liking in the field of structural engineering as a child. He enjoyed creating model buildings and testing the strength of various structures.
Job Profile: In July 1983, Dr. Gross joined NIST as a Research Structural Engineer. His research interests include computer analysis and design of structures, structural steel, fracture mechanics, nonlinear mechanics and stability. He went on to work on to lead the World Trade Center project, a project in which a team at NIST ran tests to determine what exactly was the reason for failure to lead the collapse of the World Trade Center.

Typical Work Day: 40 hours of work a week. Starts with meeting with team members, ends with testing strengths of various materials.
Leisure time: Likes to spend time with family. Going to his grandchildren’s soccer games. Home improvement projects around the house, and loves to go golfing.
Natascha S Castro
Career Preparation: Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1994 from George Washington university. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on geothermal sciences and energy.
Engineer Studies: Mechanical Engineer. Became interested because her family had trouble paying appliance bills. Wanted to invent new methods to conserve energy. Went on to receive bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from GW.
Job profile: Joined NIST February 1995. Her current research is focused on building commissioning for improved energy performance. Natascha Castro is Co-Operating Agent of the International Energy Agency research project called Annex 47. This project, directed under the Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems program, is focused on “Cost-Effective Commissioning of Existing and LowEnergyBuildings. Current work in that Annex is divided in three areas: design integration, optimization and recommissioning of existing buildings, and the development and collection of cost-benefit data for real-world projects. Natascha Castro has worked on several projects in the field of controls specifically in testing control systems, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on thermal sciences and energy.
Typical Work day: there is no typical work day according to Mrs. Castro. Sometimes she will come in and do strictly research. Other days she will perform experiments.
Leisure time: Mrs. Castro has a family of three. Husband and a son. She likes to spend her time with her family, attending sporting events, and grilling outside. She only works 35 hours a week so she has more time than most engineers to spend time with her family.
