Job Description

Trees Atlanta seeks individuals with experience working with youth (elementary and middle school age) in classroom and outdoor settings in a teaching/coaching role. The summer Camp Counselor will:

  • Be responsible for leadingoutdoor and indoor classes and activities.
  • Ensurea fun, adventure-filled, and safe summer experience that creates positive memories for budding environmental stewards (campers) alongside the TreeHouse staff and volunteers.
  • Assist in creating a fun blend of environmental education, and lots of outdoor exploration on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and local parks and greenspaces.
  • Teach environmental lessons (many based on STEM/STEAM principles).
  • Set up and organize materials according to lesson plans.
  • Supervise and guide campers at all times.
  • Ensure camper safety during all activities and excursions.
  • Leadoutdoor activities (e.g., bike rides, tree ID, orienteering, art, tree planting, invasive removal & mulching, etc.).

Requirements

  • College graduate or currently matriculated
  • Prior experience as a youth summer camp counselor
  • Knowledge of tree and plant identification, life sciences, orienteering, and arts & crafts preferred
  • Must be able to ride a bike and supervise campers on bikes - you mustbring your own bike and helmet
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively on a team
  • Able to interact with campers, parents, and others in an empathic, polite manner
  • Dependable and highly contentious with time and task management
  • Preferred: Experience teaching students 1st - 6th (environmental education, science, STEM/STEAM is a strong plus)
  • Preferred: Certified in First Aid and CPR
    Physical Requirements
  • Physically capable of active days outdoors in various weather conditions with exposure to summer sun, heat, cold, inclement weather, and natural habitats, including animals and/or insects
  • Must be a confident and safe bike rider able to ride several miles each day of camp
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs repetitively

Hours & Compensation:

This is a temporary, Part-Time position. Each camp week requires a 40-hour commitment. Camp Counselors must work all days indicated from start to end date. These dates include mandatory training days, 6 weeks of camp, and one unpaid week break (July 2 – 6). Workdays are Monday through Friday. You will work 8-hour shifts during camp hours (7:15 am to 5:15 pm). Final schedules will be set upon hire.
