COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS
The Emergency Medical Technician class is offered at Pioneer High School through sponsorship by Erie Community College (ECC). At ECC, the EMT course is worth 8 college credits. Your son/daughter has an opportunity to earn these 8 college credits at no cost if all requirements are met. These college credits are transferable to any college upon approval. Most times the credits are transferred as elective credits. To be sure your son/daughter’s college accepts these credits, you should check with the individual institution.

Cardiac electrophysiology and rhythm recognition using semi-automatic defibrillators is taught. Basic cardiology, rhythm recognition and cardiac defibrillation using semi-automatic equipment and assistance with patient’s prescribed medications are also included. Guest lecturers from in-hospital and pre-hospital field units are utilized and students are required to spend 10 hours of clinical observation in the area emergency departments. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: READY, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE
Academic Honesty: The Pioneer Central High School policy will be adhered to in all cases of academic misconduct. Plagiarism is a serious offense. All work is expected to be your own, original undertaking. Using another’s work, with or without their permission and attempting to pass it off as your own is never permitted and will be severely penalized. (Consequences for academic dishonesty will be given consistent with the Code of Conduct).
Statement Regarding StudentConduct: Preparing to become a graduate of Pioneer involves more than academic preparation in the classroom. Every day you need to demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors that are consistent with our Code of Conduct. All adults in our school will be watching to see that you are developing appropriate behavior and will provide you with feedback on your journey toward becoming world-class citizens.
Class Attendance and Active Participation:
  • 100% attendance is required for N.Y.S. certification written and practical exam.
  • Proof of make-up sessions must be on record at the end of each marking period for that specific marking period. There is a sign-in book (another state requirement) that must be signed by you each day for accurate attendance keeping.
  • Missed classes can be made up at the high school/E.C.C. South/Fire Department offering EMT class, or by volunteering for school and community EMS activities (these need approval by the instructor).
  • If you are going to miss a class due to a music lesson, athletic event and club/group activities, you must inform the instructor at least one day prior to the event.
  • Attendance and grade updates will be given at the end of each marking period or upon request.

Student Submissions of required work:
  • Homework is due on the due date – if you are not in attendance when it is due, you must hand it in upon return (this includes if you come in later during the day).
  • Each student will be given one “homework pass” per quarter that can be used. If you do all of your homework and don’t need to use the homework pass, you will earn 3 points on your final quarter grade.

Other: If you are absent from class, any materials that were handed out can be found in your file slot. This slot is also where you will find graded work for you to pick up.
GRADING
Grading is broken down as follows:
  • Tests/Examinations = 50% (Take-home tests will count 1x each and Modular Tests will count 2x’s each); there will be approximately 35 take-home tests and 7 modular tests
  • Homework = 25%; this will be given 2-3 times a week
  • Laboratory = 25%; these classes will take place randomly throughout the year – it is imperative that you are present and actively participating in these sessions. Each group of laboratory classes will have a reflective homework piece with it.
You will have a mid-term during January Regents week and a school final exam during June Regents week (this means that you will have two finals if you decide to sit for the state exam – one at school during Regents week and the other will be the state exam on a Thursday evening.)
NYS and Erie Community College require students to maintain an average of 80% for your test average throughout the course.
At the end of the course, after the high school final exam and prior to the NYS written exam, the instructor will submit final grades of those students registered with ECC to the ECC registrar’s office and the college will generate a transcript. A final grade report will be mailed to the student by the college. Official transcripts and copies of transcripts can be obtained through the Registrar’s Office at ECC South Campus.
The following grade breakdown will be used when submitting grades to ECC upon completion of the course – if applying for college credit.

There is both a skills component and a written test component to this – you must score an 84% or higher to pass. The fee for a CPR card is $3.00.
There are two 5-hour hospital observations that take place between February and May. The observations will be at one of the following hospitals: ECMC, South Buffalo Mercy or Kenmore Mercy. The student is responsible for his/her own transportation.
NYS Practical Skills Examination is typically the 1st Wednesday of June during the school day.
NYS Written Examination is typically the 3rd Thursday of June or August (depending upon which month the student qualifies for) at night (7pm – 10pm). The exam in June will take place at Pioneer High School, and the one in August will take place at the Cheektowaga Fire Training Academy.
