Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Policy

The over arching aim of our EYFS policy is to provide quality and consistency, a secure foundation, partnership working and equality of opportunity for all children and families.

We believe that children should be valued, respected and deserve the very best start in life and supported to fulfil their full potential. Young children are vulnerable and their experiences in an early years setting has a major impact on their future life. At Bognor House Day Nursery we offer a safe, secure, happy and stimulating environment. We support children to thrive and develop both indoors and outdoors on a daily basis.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) principled approach to guide the work we do with children and the care we give them. The principled approach is built on four guiding themes:

  1. A Unique Child – Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  2. Positive Relationships – Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  3. Enabling Environments – Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers.
  4. Learning and Development – Children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

We look carefully at our children; consider their needs, their interests and their stages of development, when applying the above principles. We use all this information to help plan experiences and activities across all areas of learning and development.

The seven areas of learning

Prime areas:

  1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  2. Physical Development
  3. Communication and Language

Specific Areas:

  1. Literacy
  2. Mathematics
  3. Understanding the World
  4. Expressive Arts and Design

The way in which the child engages with other people and their environment – playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically – underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner. The PRIME areas begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences, and run through and support learning in all other areas. The prime areas continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS. The SPECIFIC areas include essential skills and knowledge. They grow out of the prime areas, and provide important contexts of learning.

All areas of learning are important and depend on each other to create a rounded approach to child development. All the areas are delivered through planned play with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activates. Children are encouraged and supported to learn through play. We believe that through play children learn at their highest level and that play with other children is important for children’s development.

Parents are children’s first and most enduring educators and so we endeavour to ensure we work in close partnership with parents as this has a positive impact on children’s development and learning.

To ensure we offer high quality experiences we regularly reflect on our practice and continually look for ways to improve the quality of the learning, development and care offered to our children and families.
