INFORMATION TO THE PHD STUDENT ABOUT HOW TO COMPLETE THE PRESS RELEASE FOR THE PHD THESIS

The Faculty of Science and Technology wants to highlight its research, this includescommunicating results from PhD theses from the faculty. Therefore PhD students submitting their thesis at the faculty, should also submit a text in the form of a press release, cf. §26 in the Supplementary provisions for PhD in science.

Below is a template that should be used for the text. The second section in the template should be identical to the short summary you were asked to provide in Munin.Since this text will be used for outreach mainly to the Norwegian community, we ask that the text is given in Norwegian. If you need help for this, please ask your fellow student or your supervisor.Try to complete all paragraphs. Reduce the use of advanced terminology. In total, the text should be no more than 300-400 words, distributed as described below.

PRESS RELEASE TEMPLATE AT FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF TROMSØ

1. Heading
Main point in the thesis should be shouted out to receive attention. Use few words (preferably five or less)
2. Ingress: Short presentation of the main conclusion
You should try to “sell” your research, so this part should be straightforward and easy to understand. Not more than 20-25 words.
3. First section: About the thesis
Give the thesis title, date of defense and received degree. Also include information about financing and research school (if any), and name and affiliation of your supervisors.
4. Second section: Describe your project
Why is your research important? What did you do? How did you do it? And what did you find? This section is the most important section; it describes your work and explains what new knowledge you have brought to your research community. About 150 words. This section should be identical to the summary of your thesis provided in Munin.
5. Third section: Present yourself
This is a presentation of you. Also here, use a narrative language. Examples on what can be included: name, year of birth, birth place, education, workexperience, research interests, current employer. About 50 words.
6. Contact information
The press release should be completed with your contact information (in a schematic form as below):

7. Picture
Include a picture of yourself (minimum 1000 px). You can also include a picture which illustrates your research.
