Welcome to 6th Grade

Family and Consumer Science Class

Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classes are comprehensive courses designed to provide students with the core knowledge and skills needed to manage their lives. Project based instruction provides students with opportunities to utilize higher order thinking, communication, and leadership skills impacting families and communities. This is a trimester long exploratory class that meets every other day for approximately 85 minutes, a total of 28 days. The two main units of study in 6th grade include:

1. Foods and Nutrition

In the Food and Nutrition Unit, we will learn to make smart food choices based on the MyPlate food guide. We will work to satisfy the nutrition portion of a district nutrition standard as we analyze our personal eating habits. In the foods lab, our emphasis will be on kitchen safety, sanitation, and teamwork as we learn to follow simple recipes and make healthy snacks.

2. Personal Discovery

In the Personal Discovery unit, we will focus on self-image and self-esteem, feelings, empathy, friendship, anger management and qualities of good character. We will also complete a district standard for bullying and harassment.

Grading Policies:

Grades will be based on daily performance in class, completed assignments, quizzes and tests.

ACADEMIC GRADES will reflect what the student knows, or what material they have mastered. This will be measured through formative and summative assessments.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS are labs, journal questions, Exercise Your Options workbook activities, quizzes, or various in-class assignments that will account for 30% of a student’s grade.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS are tests, projects, and a final lab that will account for 70% of the student’s grade. These assessments can be retaken, if necessary, after a student has demonstrated significant effort at relearning the content and has completed at least 75% of the formative assessments. Students should schedule the retake with the teacher.

**STUDENTS WILL HAVE TWO WEEKS FROM THE DUE DATE TO SUBMIT ANY MISSING OR MAKE-UP WORK**

How can I succeed in FACS?

Do your best every day and have a positive attitude.

Use your class time wisely! Most of our work can and should be done in class.

Finish and hand in all work completed on time.

Try not to miss class. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for the make-up work.

Class Rules:

Respect yourself, your teacher, your peers, and our classroom.

Be in your seat when class begins. Be prepared to participate and learn.

Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself.

Be a good listener and allow your classmates to listen.

Use all equipment correctly and safely.

Clean up your workspace everyday...leave things better than you found them!

Food, gum or candy is NOT allowed in class.
