Daniel is unlikely to be the daughter of Maria (she was born approx 1815 so would have been 11). Daniel be a nephew of Maria Hall (Knapper). If so then his mother (daughter of Charles and Mary Knapper could be either – Barbara born 1805, Mary born 1807or Sarah who is Mary’s twin.

Barbara Knapper born 1805 daughter of Charles and Mary Knapper:

There were two Barbara Knappers around at this time the other one was born 1807 daughter of Thomas Knapper and Hannah (Lilley):

Ist Barbara Knapper married William Hancock 14 Mar 1831 at St James Audley

1841 Census Barbary Hancock widow 35, William 16 collier, Joseph 12 collier, Anna 7, Caleb 4 in Ranscliffe, can’t find in any other census.

It seems likely that this is the Barbara who had the child William Knapper son of William Hancock in 1826, also the child John son of Joseph Lawton born 1823 and probably William son of George Booth in 1929. In 1841 her son Joseph is 12 so was also born around 1829. It does seem unlikely that Samuel was born in the middle of this lot in about 1826.

2nd Barbara Knapper married Nathan Ball 12 Jan 1829 Wolstanton

1841 Nathan 35 Collier, Barbara 30 Hannah 11, William 9, Isaac 7, Nathan 5, George 3, James 2, Mary 11 weeks

1851 census Nathan Ball 46, Barbara 40 Isaac 17, Nathan 15, George 14, James 13, Mary Ann 10, Louisa 8, Job 6, Jacob 1, Charle Richards 70

1861 Barbara Ball widow 49 Household work?, James 22 iron stone miner, Joseph 16 Coal, Jacob 12 works at forge, Harriett 9, Selina 7 Note two doors away Harvey Knapper Head Mar 21 Iron Stone Miner from Goldenhill, Louisa Knapper 18, Isaac Ball Lodger 27, Kate Ball wife 27. All others from Kidsgrove. Can’t find or link Harvey in with any other families.

This Barbara is more likely as she has used the name Isaac for one of her sons. she could have given birth to Daniel in about 1826 and then married Nathan in 1829.

However looking at the Baptisms and Burials below and assuming that the location of Ranscliffe and Brierhurst separate them then the Brierhurst one would not have stated her son William to be the son of George Booth if she was married to Nathan Ball. So the Ranscliffe Barbara must have married Nathan Ball, but that Barbara had a son with William Hancock who married the other Barbara. I am confused.

Baptisms/Burials involving Barbara Knapper at Newchapel:

4 Jan 1823 John son of Joseph Lawton and Barbara Knapper (Ranscliff) - buried Jan 1841

25 Sep 1826 William son of William Hancock and Barbara Knapper (Ranscliff) Bap

2 May 1827 William son of Edward Jones and Barbara Knapper (Brierhurst) buried age 1 month

9 Jan 1828 Elizabeth dau of William Hancock and Barbara Knapper (Ranscliffe)buried age 10 mth

14 Jun 1829 William son of George Booth and Barbara Knapper (Brierhurst) - Bap

Can’t prove anything, it is worth looking at the other daughters of Charles and Mary Knapper – this will have to wait.
