Geriatric Medicine Higher Specialty Trainee

Doctors undertaking higher specialty training in Geriatric Medicine in the Mersey Deanery need to achieve the academic competence described in the Geriatric Medicine curriculum. Both the old and the new curricula have learning objectives that need to be achieved.

The purpose of this portfolio is to enable you to initially perform a self assessment of your progress against those learning objectives. You should then develop a personal academic development plan which should be regularly reviewed with your academic mentor who has been allocated to you for the duration of your training. These discussions should be recorded in this portfolio.

TheRecord of Progress in Achieving Academic Learning Objectives should be signed by your academic mentor when each learning objective has been achieved.

How to achieve the learning objectives

The academic learning objectives for research will be best achieved and demonstrated by conducting an independent research study either alone under supervision / guidance or in collaboration with other junior researchers.

Your research projects may be a clinical research project(s) carried out either on the wards, in clinics or in a Clinical Trials Unit but some may be partly or entirely laboratory based. Opportunities exist within the region for both types of research.

Geriatric Medicine SpRs should actively learn about the conduct of at least one ongoing major academic RCT and / or one international multi-centre pharmaceutical trial which might best be experienced in a clinical trials unit setting where permanent research staff are dealing with large studies on a daily basis.Where possible you should be signed up as a co-investigator on any existing study that is being undertaken during any or your placements in research active departments.

Geriatric Medicine SpRs are recommended to do a research methodology course.

Option 2. The year 1 modules in the University of Liverpool’s Master of Public Health (MPH) Programme

The MPH modules can be used as credits towards a number of higher degrees including the taught MSc in Medical Science course at the University of Liverpool or towards an MPhil or PhD.

Option 3. Research methodology is a major component of the MSc programme at KeeleUniversity. Completion of a 20,000 word dissertation based on a research project is a requirement of this course. Further information is available via the web link below

Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology

GCP training. All clinicians engaged in clinical research are required to do a GCP course. You local R&D manager will be able to advise on how to book onto one of these courses.
