Please outline the approximate days, hours and locations where your VISTA members will be serving during their Summer Reads term of service. Briefly explain regular VISTA activities during a typical week as well as any special activities like orientation, training and planning, or any culminating program events at the end of summer.

Keep in mind:

  • June 5 start –
  • June 5: Pre-Service Orientation, Initiative Foundation, Little Falls (full day) (travel costs covered by the literacy council)
  • July 30: last official day of service
  • Training webinars and conference calls on select Fridays
  • June 12 start –
  • June 12-13: Pre-Service Orientation, location TBD, Twin Cities metro area (full days) (travel costs covered by the literacy council)
  • August 6: last official day of service
  • Trainings on select Fridays (may include webinars, conference calls, and/or in-person events)

Supervision, lesson planning, resources and on-site orientation:

State when (days/times) the VISTA members can expect to meet on a regular basis with the site supervisor, when they will have time for lesson planning, and your plans for on-site orientation and training. Remember, all site supervisors are expected to meet formally with VISTA members at least one hour per week for formal reflection, feedback and guidance.

  • How will you make the VISTA members feel welcome, comfortable in their new surroundings, and a valuable member of your staff and volunteer team?
  • How will you introduce your VISTA members to the staff, volunteers and children with whom they will be working?
  • Do you have any staff or volunteer meetings or trainings at your site that you would like or would be helpful for VISTA members to attend?
  • How will you share your expectations as a supervisor with your VISTA members?
  • Are there ways that your VISTA members can start orienting themselves to your program on their own before they start? (website, resources, articles, etc)

Family Engagement:

Please describe any expectations of or opportunities for VISTAs to communicate with and/or support parent involvement in your program, e.g., participation in a Family Night, contribution to a parent newsletter, etc.
