Maintain Eligibility for VA Educational Benefits

How to maintain eligibility:

1.  Make Sure You Are Enrolled Full-time

To receive the full housing allowance, you must be enrolled for at least 12 credits at every point in the term. If your enrollment is below 12 credits, your benefit will be prorated by the VA to match your enrollment level.

2.  Submit Your Final Class Registration Each Term

You must submit a copy of your final class registration to the School Certifying Official each term you are requesting benefits. The term will not be certified without this request from you to do so. Late submissions of registrations mean late VA payments to you.

3.  Go To Class

You must attend your classes through the end of the term. Housing allowance is only paid for actual enrollment. This means that if you stop attending class, your housing allowance will be reduced. The VA will assess an overpayment for benefits paid after your enrollment status was reduced and you will receive a bill.

4.  Get Good Grades

You must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher each term and other requirements as defined in the VA Satisfactory Academic Standards.

5.  Pass Your Classes

You must successfully complete 2/3 of attempted credits each term. This means that if you start the term enrolled in 12 credits, you must successfully pass at least 8 credits. This is also defined in the VA Satisfactory Academic Standards.

6.  Transfer In Credits

If you have attended college elsewhere, official transcripts from previous schools must be submitted by the end of your first term receiving benefits.

Failing grades and your last date of attendance in a class can result in a VA debt to the student. The VA is paying benefits based on your rate of pursuit and attendance. If you stop attending, that information is reported to the VA and the Veterans Administration Debt Management Department will notify you of any debt or overpayment status.

Note that CCC is not the Veterans Administration. Based on information provided by you and/or college records, CCC reports registration, changes and final grades to the VA for determination of payment eligibility.
