Halloween Carnival…

Only 1 1/2 weeks away!

Our 27th Annual Halloween Carnival cannot be a great success without your support! Please make sure to sign up to work at our classroom booth or help with one of the many other “events”….bake sale, chili competition, cake decorating, etc. The carnival helps raise needed funds for our school. Make sure to visit the carnival on Friday, October 18th from 6:00-9:00 PM (haunted house, rides, food) and/or on Saturday, October 19th (haunted house, games, rides, and food) from 10:00 AM-6:00 PM. Bring family, friends, and neighbors to have some fun!

LEARNING GOALS

Reading: (Expository Text/

Non-Fiction): We just completed studying the California Regions. Our fourth graders will complete a Unit Review to prepare for their test. I will give the children some class time to work on the review, but they may also need additional work time at home. The review is due on Tuesday. Our students will be allowed to use their textbooks and notes from class on their test. In addition, our fourth graders will be creating a travel brochure that provides information about one of the California Regions. Our students will use their class notes and spend time researching on the iPads to gather information.

(Fiction): We will continue reading the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell. Our students are writing in “Karana’s Journal.” This is a great way for our students to respond to what they are reading.

Language Works Program:

Language Works, Volume 4.

Our students will focus on spelling high frequency words, words that have a short and long /o/ pattern, and will determine when to add (‘s) to nouns in order to show possession/ownership. We will work with homophones, using commas in the middle of a sentence to identify someone or something (These are called appositives: Michael, my best friend, is coming to my party.), identifying and using adverbs in our writing, how to avoid double negatives in our writing, and will learn the meanings of the prefixes re- and sym-/syn-. The children will take the Volume 4 Test next week.

Math: Unit 2, Addition and Subtraction,

Our fourth graders will use multiple strategies to subtract. We will use the open number line, decomposing, zero zapper and the U.S. standard algorithm strategies this week. Our students will also use inverse operations to check their differences. Encourage your child to explain their thinking as they work through their problems.

First in Math: Please encourage your child to use First in Math license at least 3 times per week. First in Math is a great online program that provides our students valuable practice with fact fluency, critical thinking, and problem solving. Room 33 is working really hard to get more “stickers” than Mrs. Cherveny’s class.

Writing: We will be identifying the parts of the passage, “Great Whales” to write an informational/explanatory summary.

Our students are learning how to respond to their reading using a 3 Point Response. This includes:

1.  Using words from the question to begin their answer.

2.  Using text/evidence from their reading to answer the question.

3.  Include a capital letter and punctuation in their complete sentence(s).

P.E.: We have P.E. this year with Coach Chindlund on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please remind your child to wear athletic shoes/clothes on these days.

Library: We will be visiting the library on Friday. Your child will be asked to check out a fiction and non-fiction book within his/her AR Level. Please help your child remember to return/renew his/her books each Friday.

Have you had an opportunity to chat with your child about his/her independent reading? At this point in the school year, each child should have completed at least two chapter books and taken AR tests. Our school goal is for our students to earn an 80% or higher on their AR tests. If you have questions about your child’s independent reading success, please contact me.

Science Garden: We will meet in the Science Garden with Mrs. Molnar next week.

Music: We will have music with Mr. Ball this week.

*Thanks to the families of LCM and our PTO for supporting our music and science garden programs!

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids!

We discussed and practiced how to BE PROACTIVE… this means to have a “Can Do” attitude. “I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I don’t blame others. I do the right thing without being asked, even if nobody is looking.”
