PURPOSE: To research the function of body systems and create a graphic summarizing the information.

Materials:

Textbook, computer.

PART ONE- COMPLETE RESEARCH ORGANIZER

A. Go to the website www.innerbody.com. Click on Human Anatomy Online. Select the proper body system and navigate through each system answering the questions below. The information on each system will be on the right side of the screen. You will have to search thoroughly for answers, clicking on different links. You may write on this handout. Textbook resource: Glencoe- Texas Science 7th, Unit 5.

MUSCULAR SYSTEM

1.  What is the primary function of the muscular system?

2.  How does a muscle work? ______

3. What other systems are involved in a muscle contraction?

4. Muscle tissue is found everywhere in the body. There are three different types of muscle tissue that make up different structures in the body; skeletal, smooth and cardiac. The cells that make up the different types of tissue are specialized to perform a certain functions.

Fill in the chart on the following page comparing the different types of muscle:

Muscle Type / Function / Description of Muscle Cell
Smooth
Skeletal
Cardiac

EXCRETORY (URINARY) SYSTEM

1. What is the main function of the excretory system?

2. What substances are found in urine? ______

Excretory Organ / Function
Kidneys / Removes urea, excess water, and other waste products from the blood and passes them to the ureter.
Ureters / Takes urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
Bladder / Hollow, muscular sac that temporarily stores urine.
Urethra / Tube through which urine is released from the body.
Skin and Lungs / Sweat is excreted through the skin and CO2 is excreted from the lungs.

3. The chart above describes the functions of each of the excretory organs. Once toxins are filtered from the blood, the resulting urine is passed to the ureters, which take the urine to the bladder. Here it is stored until it leaves the body through the urethra. If a person suffers damage to their kidneys, how is excretion going to be affected?

4. Besides urine, what else is excreted from the body? ______

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

1. What is the main function of the endocrine system?

2. What do hormones do?

3. Why is the hypothalamus called the “master gland?” ______

4. What does the pancreas control?

What disease results if it cannot do this properly?

5. Which endocrine gland controls your metabolism? ______

6. What is the “fight or flight” response and what endocrine gland produces it? ______

7. Fill in the chart of the parts of the endocrine system and their functions:

Endocrine Organ / Function
Hypothalamus
Pituitary
Adrenal
Thyroid
Pancreas

8. You are going through a haunted house and a skeleton pops out of a closet. You jump back and scream. Describe the reaction that is happening and how the endocrine system controls it.

INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

Use the following websites to help answer questions below

http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=ap12204

http://www.biology4kids.com/files/systems_integument.html

1. What is the major function of the integumentary system?

Parts of the Skin / Function
Epidermis
Dermis
Sweat Gland
Hair
Sebaceous (Oil) Gland

Fill in the chart of the parts of the integumentary systems and their functions:

2. One function of the integumentary system is to produce sweat from sweat glands. What purposes does the production of sweat on the skin serve?

3.  Sunscreen is used to protect against the sun’s harmful UV rays. How does the integumentary system protect us against the sun’s rays? ______

______

4. Many body systems work with other body systems to perform their function. The diagram above depicts the interrelationships between the integumentary and endocrine systems. How do these two systems work together?

NERVOUS SYSTEM

The two main parts of the nervous system are:

1. Brain (Include Cerebrum, Cerebellum and Brain Stem)

2. Spinal Cord

1. What is the main function of the nervous system?

2. Shown below are neurons, or nerve cells. These cells are designed to transmit nerve impulses quickly from the brain to other parts of the body.

How is the structure of these cells related to their function?

3. The brain is made up of neurons. Nerve impulses flow to and from the brain. The brain is made up of approximately 100 billion neurons.

Study the diagram of the brain above. Explain the significance of the folding of the brain tissue.

Fill in the chart of the parts of the brain and their function:

Part of Brain / Function
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brain Stem

4. The chart on the previous page gives the functions of the major parts of the brain. An accomplished ballet dancer suffered a blunt force trauma to the head. She is still capable of speech. Based on her occupation, which part of the brain does she hope was not severely damaged?

5. A person feels pain when an injury occurs such as a cut, scrape or burn. What role does the nervous system play in feeling pain? ______

6. What is the significance of feeling pain?

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

1. What is the main function of the reproductive system?

2. Name the main male and female hormones produced and give their function. ______

______

3. Fill in the chart of the parts of the reproductive system and their functions:

Reproductive Organ / Function
Ovary
Fallopian Tube
Uterus

4. How are the reproductive and endocrine systems related?

SKELETAL SYSTEM

1. What important role does the skeletal system play in a living organism? (be specific!)

3. What two types of cells are produced in the bone marrow?

4. What do bones store that are important for the body?

5. The skeletal system produces materials that become part of the circulatory and immune systems (red blood cells and platelets for circulatory and white blood cells for immune). Given the role of the skeletal system, describe how these three systems are related.

______

PART TWO- CONSTRUCTING THE BODY SYSTEM FOLDABLE

1.  Take a sheet of 8 ½ x 14 legal size paper. Fold it in half hamburger style.

2.  Open it up and fold each side in to meet along the fold crease in the middle. This is the cover.

3.  Take the Body Diagram for Body Systems Foldable sheet and fold in each side along the dotted line.

4.  Insert the Body Diagram sheet inside the cover (the folded legal size sheet.) The folded edges of the body diagram should fit the folds of the 8 ½ x 14 paper. If not, adjust the body diagram folds

5.  Fold the 5 sheets of 8 ½ x 11 paper in half to make a 5 ½ x 8 ½ size. Cut one sheet along the fold. Group them into two groups with 2 folded sheets and one cut sheet in one group. The other group will have just two folded sheets.

6.  Place one group inside the left fold of the 8 ½ x 14 paper. Close the fold. Place the other group into the right fold; close the fold.

7.  Staple the edge of each fold with three staples, top, middle, bottom.

8.  Open the left side of the foldable. Open the first sheet so you have a “two-page” spread. At the top of the page, write the title for the system cards to be placed on those pages. On the left the two page spreads for the systems are skeletal, muscular, Integumentary and nervous. On the right the two-page spreads for the systems are excretory, reproductive, and endocrine.

PART THREE- MATCHING BODY SYSTEM CARDS

1.  Cut out the body system cards.
2.  Lay out the system name cards on your desk.
3.  Match up the other cards to the system cards.
4.  Have the teacher check them over.
5.  Paste them into your foldable on the appropriate pages in the pattern shown to the left. /

PART FOUR- COMPLETING BODY SYSTEM DIAGRAM

·  Using color code below, label only the parts of the body system diagram that are listed below. Cut and glue the endocrine system parts in their correct places on the body diagram.

a.  Nervous system- Black

b.  Excretory System- Purple

c.  Reproductive System- Orange

d.  Endocrine System- Green

e.  Integumentary System- trace outline of the body in brown.
