UNM-Valencia Campus Library Database Exercise 1: ProQuest Research Database

Your Teaching Assignment:

1.  Explore ProQuest Research Database using the some of the following topics.

Leslie Silko’s Ceremony

Sherman Alexie

Gloria Anzaldua

2.  Make sure you can explain all the features listed in the “Peer Teach” section below.

3.  Divide up presentation among members & plan your lesson.

4.  Teach the class how to effectively use the database by covering all the features in the “Peer Teach” section.

How to access ProQuest Research Database:

On Library’s Home Page click on the Find Articles/Databases.

Under “Complete Database Lists” choose one and find the database name on the list.

Click on the link to open the database.

Explore!

·  Type in keywords for your main search concepts. How could you refine/limit these results.

·  Click on the “Advanced Search” link. Experiment with adding an additional keyword in the second search box.

·  Get/Cite the article: Click on the title of an article and read the abstract. Explore the icons that allow you to Email and Cite.

·  Discuss each of the items below and be prepared to teach them to your fellow students.

Peer Teach!

Include all of the following items in your group presentation:

·  What types of sources can you find in your database (newspapers, books, articles, dissertations, etc)?

·  Demonstrate how to get to the database from the library home page.

·  Demonstrate a sample search.

·  Explain how to narrow results by date.

·  Demonstrate how to narrow your search by subject and explain why you might want to do this.

·  Demonstrate advanced search and explain the difference between using and, or, and not.

·  Demonstrate how to get a citation for an article and how to email an article to yourself.

·  Feel free to share anything else you think other’s might find useful.
